SKYPE - How fast does my upload speed need to be?

I have Skype loaded onto my wife's older IBM T41 laptop. It's got something like a 1.6Ghz Pentium M I believe. The video transmission is pretty choppy and our transmission often freezes up.

I'm wondering if it's due to the hardware or if it's because of my internet service. I get about 512kbps upload rates. I'm about to switch internet providers and I'm trying to decide between download/upload speeds of either 8mbps/512kbps or 12mbps/1mbps. Do you think that upping my upload speed to 1mbps would help skype or do you think that 512kbps should be perfectly sufficient?

For those of you that run Skype and have no problems with producing a smooth transmission: What is your upload bandwidth?

We use Skype to communicate with our boss who is on a remote island and running a satellite connection, im guessing his connection is no faster than 512kbps and our company is running DSL. The reception and delay is terrible, most of the time we call his cell. In my opionion get the faster connection and you will see the difference.

Satellite is horrible and it's more comparable to dialup than any kind of broadband so I would say that's not a good comparison but I do appreciate you sharing that info.
