Best headphones for my budget.

Thread Starter
My old $5 logitech headphones just died after like 5-6 years of loyalty.

I worked quite a bit over the summer to get my rig built and I filed for taxes, so now waiting for my moneys.

I owe a couple bucks to my mom and I will have like $200 left over to buy whatever I want.

To the point: I need good headphones for music/gaming. They need to have good sound quality, longivity, and durability. Oh, and the cord has to be pretty average length...maybe 7-9ft.

So?
I saw HD555 headphones, people say they're decent but is there anything better?

What kinds of music?

My immediate thought is to recommend something like the ATH-A700 / AD-700 for gaming, though they might not be the best option for your music tastes.

I would actually consider a new sound card and a pair of headphones for that budget, or perhaps an amp if they're something like the DT-770 or HD-595 that can be more difficult to drive.

I personally recommend the audio technica ad700's because I have them and love them. The hd555 or ad700's(~$100) + an xtrememusic/xtremegamer (~$70) soundcard are probably your best bets though. No point to buying really nice headphones to hook up to onboard sound.

$200? You got a lot of choices there.

My personal recommendation is the Ultrasone HFI-780's from rmcaudio.com for $200. Most people have been giving them fantastic reviews. I personally have an ALO recabled HFI-780, and they're a drastic improvement over my AD700. Better SQ and soundstage, plus oodles more bass. Other people have been saying they prefer stock HFI-780 over DT880, DT990, HD650, HD600, D2000, even Darth Beyers.

Hi, I've also been considering the HFI-780s and I currently own the AD700s. I was wondering how they compare but unmodded? If you ever owned them unmodded that is. How do they compare in terms of detail, preciseness and soundstage?

Thanks.

i have these and they blow music away with the XtremeGamer Soundcard!

the A700's give much more bass than the AD700's

Did you not return your ALO 780's?

This recommendation is not in any way reasonable for Zensou. ALO 780's need to be surrounded with at least $700-800 invested in the rest of the setup to sound nearly as good as they should with the mods.

$200 is a good budget to enter into the realm of headphones, no doubt.

There are more, but this is a nice list to start with (I'm trying to consider the gaming aspect as well).

Besides that, Ultrasones have a very love-them-or-hate-them sound, because they use a proprietary system with their bass... and not everyone likes the sound. All sound is subjective, of course, but there seems to be very little middle ground with Ultrasones.

Eh? I recommended him the stock version for $200, which apparently shouldn't sound too different.

Oh, and I just said to hell with it to selling them. They finally wowed me after about 70hrs burn in, so I decided to instead start upgrading my amp.

If he doesn't like them, he can always sell them anyway The fad period for these is still pretty strong as far as I can tell, so the resale value should be pretty high.
