can you do a system restore in safe mode? Or boot from the windows CD and do a repair installation. Isn't there a boot menu at the beginning in bios? F8 is for mine, it just brings up your devices you have attached and you can select the CD drive etc. The only problem i have had with boot up is when the disk configuration changes, yea with my setup a nightmare, but now works

have you don any work/changes to the inside of the case

so you did boot with ubuntu?
if so copy these files to your xp drive NTLDR (or ntldr; no extension!) and NTDETECT.COM
