Hey folks...

Thread Starter
Finally got my rig built.
After waiting almost a 2 weeks for newegg to exchange my E8400, they told me they no longer had them in stock. So I settled with a Q6600 and got free overnight shipping out of them (you would think that if they were expecting to do an exchange they would keep at least one in stock to cover it). Runs a little hotter then what I think the E8400 would, but still not too bad. Im idling around 25c and loading around 35c with it overclocked to a little over 2.6ghz. Ive got the Zerotherm Nirvana cooling that (with the paste properly applied this time... not gobed on lol).

The Motherboard, Asus' P5N-D runs hot as hell even with the NB fan installed. Thats at around 45c under load. Im using the stock coolers that came with that. I havent messed around witht he overclocking too much, seeing as how I dont know much about it. So at the moment Im using the AI overclocking.
For some reason though I cant go over 10% or the system becomes unstable and crashes. When I was looking around at the manual settings instead of the usual FSB number its some 4 digit number that I can make heads or tails over what it means. This is completely different then any bios ive ever seen. Usually its FSB, Multiplier, and Voltage to play with. Anyone know whats going on with that? How I can maybe get some more POWA out of this thing? From what I understand the Q6600 can do 3ghz pretty easily.

So here are the final specs!

Intel Q6600 OC'd to 2.63ghz
Zerotherm Nirvana (cpu cooler)
Asus P5N-D
4GB OCZ DDR800 5-4-4-15
evga Nvidia 8800 GTS (G92) 512mb
WD Caviar GP 500GB
2x Sony dvd/CD-RW drives
Antec 650W PSU
Acer 22" LCD
Antec P180B case
4 (soon to be 5) Antec Tricool fans
Logitech X-530 Speaker system
Logitech S 510 Keyboard/Mouse

I think thats about as detailed as I ought to get
Any improvements that I can make without having to RMA and re-buy stuff? New parts ideas ar always welcome.
Also... The mobo is pretty tight concerning the future addition of another vga... Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks for all your help throughout all this!

I guess a little clarification would help. Are you seeing this odd 4 digit number in the bios or within AI overclocking software. (Stay away from overclocking software as well, learn to use the BIOS for your OC) Can you post a pic of it?
Your Q6600 should OC fairly well if it's a G0 so keep your hopes up.

I get the weird bios number when in the manual settings... Not the AI overclock.
For some reason the bios doesnt pick up the SLI ready memory. Weird. Any fixes for that?

Not sure if it's just me but the pics don't show up.
I am not totally familiar with the SLI memory but if I understand it right the board has to have EPP(?) support, and I can't find anywhere on the asus product page that your P5N-D has that. Maybe that's the issue?

edit: pics work now

that solves the memory mystery... What about the fsb numbers? It doesnt make sense that it would have 4digits. I want to get it up to at least 3Ghz, but really cant untill I know what the stuff means

I think what you are referring to is the NB strap. In the 2nd pic you posted it is labeld "Actual FSB". NB straps are a complicated matter so if you feel you really want to understand it you can search the forums where you will find very extensive explanations of what it is and what it does. Basically if it's set to auto you don't have to worry about it too much. Follow the Intel OC Guide in my sig and when you hit a hang up let us know what it is so we can get you to your MAX OC.

Ive been messing around in there and this is what I got so far:
NB PCIE Frequency: 120Mhz

Unlinked with the ratio set at auto
FSB@ 1336mhz (multiplier @ 9)
Mem@ 800mhz

Voltages:
Vcore@ 1.3v
DRAM@ Auto
HT@ 1.3v
NB@ 1.3
SB@1.5

I have...
Limit CPUID MaxVal: Disabled
Enhanced C1 (C1E): Disabled
Execute Disable Bit: Disabled
Virtualization Technology: Disabled
Enhanced Intel Speedstep Tech: Disabled

Anything here I should change to make improvements before I move on to messing with my ram?

Sorry for the double post, but I would like to keep the information separate for my ease of viewing...

So I started messing around with the ram and when I ran CPU-Z I saw an interesting thing... Why does it say that my ram is only running at 400mhz?

I wouldn't run you PCIE bus that fast. You can run it up to 110 or so but anything over that may cause some issues, that's what I've heard anyways. With CPU-Z just multiply what is says your ram is running at by 2x. 400 x 2= 800 It's running @ 800 because you have it on a divider.

yeah... I overclocked the ram a bit, but had to tone it down... thats what was making the rest of the system unstable. I ran 3dmark06 and I think I got a pretty decent score.. 13632
I think ill stick with what im at for now untill I get the urge to mess around with things again. Thanks for all the help Jules
