Can't hit 3.6 on 6600?

Bah, I'm frustrated.

I just spent the evening lapping my chip, and I got it pretty damn shiny with the 2000 grit at the end. Previously I was idling at 44c on stock, which I thought was crap, though I was also probably adding too much AS5.

Anyway, after the lap, I reseated with a wee bit of AS5 as per the instructions and what I read here, and sure enough, my idle at stock was down to 34. Woohoo!

All for naught though, as my previous idle at a 3.4 - 3.6 overclock was 45 - 47, and now it's goddamn 48!! Agh! Needless to say, I still can't get stable at 3.6, and it's bugging me...

I don't know if it's my voltages holding me back, but I do best with a 1.475 in my BIOS, and an actual of 1.43, drained to 1.38 in small FFT prime95 test. This is a clock of about 3.4, with RAM tweaked at 1050, 5-5-5-15, 2.2V. Seems the best I can do, and is stable on prime95 blend test for 9 hours. The highest load temp was 62C, but now I think it might go as high as 68. Crapola!

I know I should wait 200 hours and then see, which I probably will, but I read that OCZ freeze and a TRUE 120 might help. Worth investing, or is my G0 just not responding well?

THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE

I highly recommend that you do a volt mod on your board. It will help you gain stability on your Quad. i suspect that it's vdroop causing the instability.

Also, investing in a better quality cooler might help with your temp problems -- ie the TRUE you suggested in your OP

Just my two cents..

Thanks a lot for the responses. I will examine the voltage mod in detail.. Also shawnjo, based on your sig guide, I guess I'm not doing too badly? I am currently running at 47 idle, and 62C on Prime95. I shot up to 69 on small FFT, and backed off; will try again when my AS5 is cooked in. I guess all in all I will wait to buy a anything else, and try the volt mod in the meantime. Thanks for the replies again...

I think you're doing ok...

your temps are pretty high. Ideally you want your idle temps around 40 ish or even less and your load temps < 70 max. (which is what i have on air) But you want as low as possible....

Like I said, a volt mod will give you the stability you need, but it's your temps that you need to be cautious of. So invest in either a Tuniq Tower 120 or the ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme to lower your temps.

Doing a volt mod will also help you reduce the voltage your Q6600 may need to run at a specific FSB, so in effect you may even end up reducing temps in light of increasing the efficiency of your voltage.

Cool beans. I just ordered the TRUE and some ocz. The lapping is just icing on the cake. The temps have had me scared, and while I have had luck with zalman in the past, it really seems like the weak link now.

Thanks for all the help, I'll read up on the voltage mod while I wait!

Okay, I did the volt mod. That is the coolest thing ever. Took about 2 minutes, and now when I set to 1.42, it is 1.42. Awesomesauce. So my CPU runs stable, and at cooler voltages. When my TRUE 120 gets here (probably tomorrow), I'll be boss.

Now I'm running intoa different problem though. When I set my QDR to 1600 (3.2 Ghz), on a 3:2 memory divider for a 1066 RAM clock, I just can't get stable. I'm rock solid at 3.4, 1050 with 5-5-5-15 timings, CPU volt at 1.425 in BIOS and actual thanks to the mod, but 3.6 is an issue.

The specific problem is Prime95. The small FFT is stable, albeit hot (69C), but I think a lapped chip with the TRUE 120 will take care of my temps. Blend Prime95 boinks in less than a minute though, always with a rounding error. I read that is likely RAM. I loosened my timings to 6-6-6-18, to no avail. I jumped the RAM volts up to 2.3, which I'm sure it can take, perhaps unwisely, but still not stable. I increased CPU to 1.45, no dice, and set it back down to enjoy the volt mod; I don't think CPU is issue here.

What's the next step? Loosen RAM more? More volts to RAM? Or am I missing something?

And thanks so much for the volt mod again; AWESOME!

I had a 780i and I just RMA'd it. Maybe it was me, but I had the same problem as you did. I could get stable at 2.4, any higher, bsod's.

Abilor try two things, first try setting your RAM divider to unlinked and manually set the RAM to 1066 and see if that helps. If not you may have to increase the NB voltage as well. I am not sure how it is listed in the BIOS. With 4 sticks of RAM running it puts more stress on the northbridge, and you need to add voltage to get it stable. I am not sure what you are running at now, but try 1.4v or 1.45v if you have good cooling on NB.

If none of that works you may have to settle for a slower RAM speed i.e. 1000MHz. Messing with the timings wont help much.

If you haven't seen it yet, Robilar started a guide for this board. Give it a read through. Most relevant info is on the first page.
