Gentoo Portage Help

I'm trying to install k9copy. Also, I'm new to Gentoo.

Code:
localhost jeff # emerge --search k9copy
Searching...
[ Results for search key : k9copy ]
[ Applications found : 1 ]

*  app-cdr/k9copy
      Latest version installed: 1.2.3
      Homepage: http://k9copy.sourceforge.net/
Description: k9copy is a DVD backup utility which allows the copy of one or more titles from a DVD9 to a DVD5
      License: GPL-2
Then

Code:
localhost jeff # emerge app-cdr/k9copy
Calculating dependencies -
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "app-cdr/k9copy" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.3 (masked by: )

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
I did the following but not sure if it is right. I still get the masked thing.

Code:
localhost jeff # echo "=app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.3" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

There may be a discrepancy with the program and your system.

Try DVDshrink, its a great program that could do everything you possibly could want with a DVD

I'm running 64 bit so no Wine.

I got it down to this.

Code:
localhost jeff # emerge k9copy
Calculating dependencies /
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "k9copy".

I think I got it, I had to sync with the servers.

Code:
emerge --sync
yeah be sure to sync every now and then just to keep your portage tree up to date. as well, there is another sync command that you should run on maybe a biweekly basis, i think its like sync world or something. it explains it fairly well in the gentoo linux handbook - http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/

K9Copy will also back up a dual layer to standard DVD5.

Are you referring to "update world"?

if you are using the machine in your sig, then my guess is that you have 64bit gentoo installed. and your arch is amd64

and it seems from the package description: http://gentoo-portage.com/app-cdr/k9copy

all versions are masked for amd64 but do have ~amd64 (which means unstable version)

i tried it and i got:
Code:
$ emerge -pv k9copy

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "app-cdr/k9copy" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.3 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.2 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.1 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.0 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.1.3 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- app-cdr/k9copy-1.0.4 (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
you can unmask it by adding that keyword to your accepted keywords file

(you should be doing this as root, $su to become super user)

Code:
#nano -w /etc/portage/package.keywords
add this line in
Code:
>=app-cdr/k9copy-1.2.3 ~amd64
press ctrl+x to exit nano editor
then y to confirm "yes"
[enter] to save and exit.

now try again
Code:
#emerge -av k9copy
it should allow you, then say "y" or "yes" [enter] to begin emerge.

if it doesn't, post your results.

hth

p.s. can't you use k3b ? i don't know what you need k9copy for, but if you have k3b, you know how awesome the app is.
