[ZDNet] Want Vista SP1? Here’s what to expect - Page 2

No. SP1 is checking if all your driver's for each manufacturer is going to work with SP1. If they wont. it wont install it until the manufacturer releases drivers that will work. Thats why not many people with OEM computers dont see the update in Windows Update.

What they're probably thinking is that they allowed XP to remain in the market as their latest OS offering for far too long and as a result became their own worst competitor when Vista was finally released. By decreasing the amount of time each subsequent OS remains in the market they're probably hoping to stop that happening again.

The other reason for XP being out for so long is there was many sebacks with Vista in development. The project was mothballed twice for a brief time and then the lead either quit or was fired. Vista had a rough start and now all people wanna do is bash it. I do hope the next OS will be more ofa from the groud up kinda thing. Im not holding my breathe though...

It won't install it without you telling/asking it to.

I installed SP1 on my laptop last night through Update, worked flawlessly and the desktop's a bit snappier. Only real change I've noticed.

That's odd, my 1500 is running Ultimate x64 with SP1 and sound works fine.

First things first: SP1 won’t be installed on your system automatically. (Automatic Updates won’t begin for at least another month, and even then they’ll be rolled out slowly.) In fact, you might not even know SP1 is available unless you manually check Windows Update. If you meet the qualifications, you’ll see the download listed as an Important update.
It was waiting nicely in Windows Update yesterday night for me!

like previously stated, its in the updater but, if you have compatibility issues, it wont auto install. you can still get it manually if yo dont mind breaking your OS.

edit

it installed automatically on my acer7720-6604. didnt expect acer to have better support than say, dell

My framerate in games dropped by more than half after installing sp1 via windows update. Hardware/process monitoring revealed nothing out of the ordinary.

I did have this problem before with the version from technet. After weighing my options I opted to reformat and start again with a clean install. That fixed the problem in the past. This time a reformat made no difference.

This certainly wasn't what I expected.
