SAS/SATA2 Raid

Thread Starter
Hi people, just wanted some opinions on my next project. Theres no real point to it but it will keep me busy for a couple of weeks and im interested in the difference performance wise. This is what i intend to do;

1x new PCIex4 SAS/SATA 4 port (3Gb/s each) raid controller (got)
4x new 80gb 8mb 7200 sata2 drives (got)
1x 4 bay external sata enclosure (maybe)
3 or 4x SAScsi 74Gb 15k drives (soon)
1x 3 bay internal/4 bay external SAS enclosure (maybe)

Each array (sata and sas) will be raid0, i just havnt decided exactly the configuration im going to use, hence the maybe's above. I will do some more research, if i can raid across ports i will go for 3 sas drives (raided across 3 ports) with the 4 sata drives in an enclosure on port 4.

Anyone out there got an sas setup in a desktop machine? I've already got a u160 scsi setup, this will be for sale when i have completed this project.

Not on my desktop, but I do use a Sun Netra X4200 server with dual SAS 136GB Seagate Savvios 10K in RAID1.

SAS controllers are so expensive... Which brand are you think of getting?

On eBay, SAS controllers are cheaper than SATA ones.

I have a couple systems here at work with internal SAS _and_ sata raid setups (both in raid 5). One of them is a desktop, although it really is a server board in a desktop chassis with an 8 bay SAS/SATA built in enclosure. Right now the sas drives in my desktop system are out on loan to a customer for testing. (they are trying to decide whether or not there is enough performance improvement to warrant the cost of SAS drives).

If you are going to connect _only_ sas or sata to that LSI controller it will do OK. If I remember correctly, that controller will not handle both sas and sata at the same time (same with the drive backplane (if there is one)). I am also not sure if that card actually does HW raid or if it still uses the main system resources.

I can mix sata and sas arrays with this controller, over 122 devices, also it has integrated (hardware) raid 0, 1, 1e, 10e.

from lsi website

Managing several drives in a storage array can
be difficult when running a mixture of SAS and
SATA. LSI’s MyStorage™ management software
makes storage array optimization easy
