Can "Servers" use Desktop parts?

post #1 of 15
Thread Starter
I can't afford "true" server parts, but I have a Sempron, a motherboard, and some spare ram. Will it work well as a web server? OR will I have to buy those really expensive server cpus? I'm a noob at these things.

Any help is appreciated!

Depending on what you want it to do, sure it could be a server. Don't expect that rig to do a whole lot of work though. It would work fine as a game server for a dozen or so people. Maybe more, I don't know a whole lot about servers.

What are you planning on doing with this server? Will it be left turned on 24/7? What OS will it be running?

I'll buy a server OS if it's better or if the regular desktop OS are okay I'll stick with xp or Linux. And I plan to use this server as a web server (websites).

Linux would be the best choice.

There really is no desktop... Ubuntu has a server disk, all that means is it has server software preinstalled- but nothing else, none of that useless junk like a graphical user interface.. Which it sounds like you probably want....

Linux = Linux.

For a n00b I recommend Ubuntu

A server version would be ideal but just about any distro would work well. If you're new the Ubuntu Server might be a good place to start, since Ubuntu has a very large community. Debian, CentOS, FreeBSD, etc. would all work well too.
