[IGN]Warren Spector Disappointed by Game Stories - Page 2

Dont froget Bioshock
Half Life is all about atmosphere, not story, although the latest episode started improving that situation by a ways. FFX was better than FF7 by a mile, although I think we all could have done without FFX-2.

Bioshock was actually an innovative idea, and very well executed by completely ripping off System Shock 2.

CoD4 would have made a pretty decent movie, but as it was I'm glad it got made into a game instead.

GUN had an okay story and even not half bad voice acting, but the dev team skimped on content.

Oblivion had a story there I'm sure, but frankly I was so bored that I never got to it.

Doom3 had more story than any previous ID game... now if only it could have had more complicated gameplay than "monsters jumping out from behind things."

Deus Ex was amazing. It's sequel was crap in every way except for the streamlined inventory system and the basic engine. Of course the engine was so underutilized I have to wonder why they felt the need to bother.

Max Payne 1&2 - simply brilliant. Not for bullet time, but for making a perfect third person shooter with atmosphere and very real storytelling.

What Spector should be lamenting is the death of Lucasarts adventure games. All of Tim Schaefer's games these days are 3rd person platformers. Funny, but just not the same.

Warren Spector is behind Deus Ex, one of the greatest games ever conceived.

It's worth listening to what he has to say, he certainly knows more about making a good game than most developers today.

I just wish he was involved in the production of Deus Ex 3, most of the team responsible for that only have experience with console games.

Pretty much. I consider Morrowind to be the second greatest RPG I have ever played, after BG2.

But to everyone in this thread, and even the god that is Warren Spector: Mass Effect anyone?

After the "would you kindly" bit it fell apart. The boss battle at the end was extremely cliche.

Prey had an OK story from what I saw (I only played the demo).

RE4 had an OK story...

I guess all we're getting is OK to poor stories out of games. I remember there was a time (the FF7 days) where finishing a game would leave me a feeling of "Wow, it's over..." No more.
Nowadays it seems like "Thank god it's over..."

COD4 and Max Payne 2 have a tie for my favourite game in terms of quality of storyline. Both felt like you were playing a movie which is ideally what I look for in a story-driven game.

I think I have to dust of the Lucas Arts 6 pack collection (Full Throttle, Monkey Island, Star Wars, etc).
