8800gt Slied or 8800gts(g92) Single - Page 2

post #11 of 16
Look at it this way. SLI for a better gaming experience at the cost of reliability, time and ease of use. Everyone knows that nVidia chipsets run into more issues than Intel ones if pushed to the limit.

I would take a 8800GTS with an Intel board for peace of mind.

Its going to end up costing me 500 bucks for two 8800gt and single 8800gts would cost me 450 dollars max(thats a saving of $50 bucks)
SLI'd 8800gt's will wipe a single 8800gts, no doubt... And for the money it's not really hard to rationalize spending an extra $50 for the added horsepower of a second 8800gt. But things you have to consider are,

1) The 8800gt dumps all it's heat into your case(x2 for SLI).
2) Conversely, the 8800gts expels the bulk of the heat it generates out of the case.
3) 8800gts has far more OC potential... (My 8800gts is max game/bench stable @ 802 core and 2100 shader/memory).
4) 2x 8800gt's require a fair amount of power, do you have a decent PSU?
5) Not all games take advantage of SLI(if I recall correctly).

apology for the double posts...

Guys you didn't answer my question...Really interms of price/performance is 8800gts single better than two 8800gt?

I'd say grab 2x 8800 GT cards and run them in SLI, then you get a good performance boost without such a giant pit in the wallet

I kind of already answered that,

Just make sure you have adequate air flow in your case and a better PSU. Do they carry Corsair PSUs @ your Aussie retailer(s)? If so, go for the Corsair HX 620W(Seasonic) or if that's too expensive you could pick up the VX550W(CWT) model.

VX550W -> Review
HX620W -> Review

-EDIT-

I know 550W might not sound link much of an upgrade over your current PSU, but don't let rated wattage fool you... it's what's inside that counts .

I wasn't about to settle for that, and decided to push, pull, and pry various parts away from the secondary heatsinks to see just how much meat was on the VX550's bones. 12V is handled by a pair of STPS3060CW 30A parts in parallel. That adds up to a potential 60A of capacity. I don't have a calculator handy, but that seems like it would be enough to give us a mere 41A without much ripple, wouldn't you agree? Moving on to the 3.3V and 5V side of it, we have STPS30L45CW parts giving us a potential 30A to work with. Adequate, but pushing things a bit on the 3.3V.
