Who's Right? Core Temp? BIOS? Speedfan?

Thread Starter
I have the E8400 right now in my 680i and I'm completely confused on which temp is correct. BIOS says ~43c. Speedfan and ntune(removed) are/was saying ~36-38c. Core Temp version 0.97.1 says ~51c. All of these temps are at idle.

Yes I do have stock h/s and fan, but I also have stock speeds. What gives? FYI my room temp is usually around 72f. I will be putting my zalman 9700 on tomorrow to help but I still want to know what to trust for temps. Right now I'm just playing it on the safe side and going by core temp readings.

I would go with CoreTemp.

The BIOS reading is not idle, there is a load (from what I have gleaned).

Try CPUid's Hardware Monitor

Do each of those programs list a different max temp? If one is reading 10C lower, but it has the max listed 10C lower too, then it is still consistent. You should look at the delta between core temp and max temp. I don't know if you have seen this, but it is worth a read:

I personally use coretemp and realtemp. I try to stay withing 25C of max just to be safe.

Yup the temps in bios are under load so there is a good chance they are both correct

I'd use Core Temp, my BIOS says I'm idle at 14c, Core Temp says 28c...

Thanks alot!. Ok I thought that cpu and cores were generally close to each other. CPUID just backed up all programs. See if this seems right.

Temperatures CPU 39c

E8400 temps Core 0= 51c Core 1= 51c

With large of gap between cpu and cores, what could be the problem? This is agrivating b/c I have everything stock.

Edit: Ran a few minutes of Prime95 while watching temps on coretemp and cpuid hw monitor.

Both programs correspond with each other for core temps. I got up to 65c and stopped the test.

In HWmonitor it gives tjunction readings and idle sits about 38c and climbed to 48c load with prime95

Core temps list tjmax at 105c. I can't remember speedfan's and I deleted it. Would improper seating of h/s fan or too much TIM do this? Seems like temps would be high all around.

Yikes. 51 degrees at idle with stock voltage?

Remove the heatsink, clean off the TIM, reapply it properly as directed by the manufacturer and plop the heatsink back on.

That's an insanely high temperature.

Yeah you aren't kidding there man. I'm not at home right now but I think my volts are like 1.12ish fsb and core. That's just default settings after P32 BIOS flash. I know this cpu is rated at something like .85ish to 1.3ish, but I'd have to go back and look that up.

I'll be using AC5 when I put on my zalman tomorrow so I hope that makes a big diff. I just don't understand how the cpu temps are so much lower than actual core temps. I don't know maybe I have one of those screwed up diodes like so many others have.
