You don't get major goodies and changes in a service pack the way Mac users get them in 10.x --> 10.y. Would it satisfy you if they "just called it" OS XI instead of "10.5"?
Not to turn this into a windows vs mac debate. But yes Xp and Vista are completely different animals with completely re-coded kernels: Different GUI, driver handler, multi-core handler, security stronghold. Dont really see a difference between Tiger and leopard.. it might have an extra program or have some bug fixes but they're not different animals, atleast to the extent that XP/Vista are.

And XP>Vista is a Tock, Vista>Vienna will be a tick.. so not as big of change but its still pre alpha now so lets just wait.

Err....Its generally accepted that its coming out by 2010, even then its gonna be delayed. Even then its more like a windows 2000 OS, not a big enough upgrade.

I think the real problem with Vista is that some people that just don't know Jack about PCs are buying low-end slow OEM PCs that just can't run Vista. It’s the OEM companies like gateway, dell, acer, ECT that are giving Vista a bad name, By putting 1GB of RAM and Pentium 4s in systems and then marking them vista ready.

I don’t think I know anyone that has bought a high-end PC other than my self (Yes my rig was at one point high-end ish) and my father. Most buy cheap laptops with vista and expect it to run like a 1500$ system.

It’s not M fault that so many people are computer ignorant and don’t have any idea as to what it is that they are buying.
Thats the story of most people.

Guess it's in the eye of the beholder. While XP --> vista is a bigger step up compared to 10.4 --> 10.5, that's what you feel because m$ hasn't updated anything in 7 years.

But it's not fair to call 10.x --> 10.y a "service pack." That's completely inaccurate. 10.A.x --> 10.A.y is a service pack.

Edit: Actually, if you want to put it that way:

Leopard has different memory management than Tiger (can be seen in the more-used Active memory vs memory that would otherwise be "free memory" in Tiger).

Leopard is now completely 64-bit for Core 2 Duo Macs.

Leopard's networking is different from Tiger's.

And in addition to those are the little software goodies, of course. Whether or not they're worth it is up to you.

I am just a dog, and Microsoft only feeds me the old crummy dried chow day after day.
No wonder dogs stray from home.

If I were a software guru, I already would have taken up Linux...........

The only thing I like more about XP right now is the reduction in hassle for drivers. A little while back, I tried sidestepping the issue by testing Ubuntu and that was 10 times worse. I want to double click a few times, maybe reboot, and have wireless internet. That's a joke with Ubuntu. So is wanting X-Fi drivers.

Vista is to me what XP was when it came out. New, not really needed, kind of pretty, and really just different. Once I adapted to it, though, it worked great for what I needed, and still does. I have confidence that Vista will be the same since there are few glaring problems. That being said, it won't be my primary OS until SP1 because gaming is still better on XP if you can't benefit from DX10.

As a side note, one of the posters said that it would be better once 64-bit PC's were mainstream. Uh, Athlon 64 was at least 2 years ago and the 64-bit Pentiums/Core series weren't much later. This is the main problem; people using ****ty hardware. I don't expect to play Crysis on a ****ty PC and I don't expect Vista to do well on it, either.

I'll be trying Ubuntu this weekend.

Vista isn't even worth [like if I was like Captain Barbosa and Vista was like cursed Aztec gold...]

Update: I'm very satisfied with Ubuntu.
