Does it reduce lifespan of CPU if temp is kept low?

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
With my Q6600, if I can keep peek temp below 50 all the time at 3GHz, will this reduce the life expantency of the CPU?

I guess what I'm really asking is what determines the life expantency of a CPU? Is it the heat (above certain threashhold) that slowly kills CPU?

Keeping it at lower temps improves the life expectancy. But is this a G0 or B3

Heat, frequency, thermal shock, and time on all effect the life span of a CPU. Heat and frequency do exponential damage as you reach the extremes. 50C at 3GHz isn't that bad.

What does it matter which it is? Shouldn't matter for his question.

Keeping the temps as low as you can increases the life span of a processor. Your temps right now are fine.

I believe a combination of heat and high voltages can kill the CPU earlier in its life. I'm sure about the 65nm chips but the newer 45nm chips can blow transistors due to higher voltages before the heat can kill it. This has been evident with the E8400s.

Normally I think high OCing can shorten the lifespan of a processor by about 4 year which in turn reduces the expectancy to about 6 but then again, we here don't usually keep a processor active for that long before moving on to something better.

i believe oc'ing shortens the life much like sending to much water through a pipe too fast will cause it to erode. at least thats how i rationalize it.

Max temperature differences and more overclocking head room.

G0 = 70.1 C
B3 = 60.1 C

Does Intel provide MTBF? I haven't seen any published...
