3870 vs. 3870X2

So is there a huge difference. What would be the best performer/oc'r; 3870 in XFire or one 3870X2?
With the X2 you will essentially have twice the processing power, but whether or not games or your cpu will fully utilize this, is the real question.

Well I was looking to use the 5000+ BE with a single 3870X2, or the same processor with 2 3870's in XFire.

The performance is very similar. This review from Tom's Hardware shows the 3870 X2 and "Crossfired" 3870's perform nearly the same.

The advantage of 3870 X2 is you don't need a Crossfire capable board to run it.

Agreed. 3870 is fine especially you have < 20" LCD. If go for x2, make sure you OC your cpu and a good 550 Watt PSU with two 2x3-pin PCIe power connectors.

However, it's been proven many times that even a 5000+ @ 3.2ghz just doesn't have the processing power to feed the 3870x2. I think you would get similar scores with a single 3870.

What AMD chip could handle it?
I think the highest 3dmark score for an X2 is around 14,000. I think that was with a 6400+ BE @ 3.5 and a single 8800GT if I'm not mistaken. Single 8800GTs typically score in the high 16ks-17ks on intels, just to give you an idea.

So, I should get the 6400+ BE if I wanna use a 3870X2?

Personally, I think either CPU (5000 or 6400 Black Editions) should be fine. The 6400 will probably perform better - simply because it's generally a higher performing CPU. I've yet to see any conclusive evidence of a 5000+ "bottlenecking" a 3870 X2.

I mean, of course the 6400+ will probably perform better (overall) with the 3870 X2 .... but that's because it's higher performing CPU - not necessarily because the 5000+ is "bottlenecking" the card. I know some people have made claims of this - so if someone can show conclusive evidence, feel free to present it.
