I think this thread shows us that the US have no common sense, and have to be told everything to every specific detail
Maybe it is different in the UK, but express shipping can cost anywhere from $20-$100 more depending on weight and location. It is not a matter of losing $5-$7. Also, I as a consumer could care less the reason the package didn't arrive. I have lost $5000+ repair jobs as I didn't have parts I needed on time. (not to mention the loss of the customer) there is nothing greedy about that. If he wanted a full refund on shipping or a bunch of free stuff, then yeah, thats a bit over the top. To expect some compensation for services paod for, but not received is justified to me.
