I'm not familiar with the EK res, but I've seen pictures where people have tubing and a fill port connected to the top.

You can take the 24pin connector and wire a paper clip between the green wire and any of the black wires. Have your pump primed and connected to the psu and turn the psu on.

The shrouds really make a difference. The only reason not to go with them is if you simply don't have the room.
