Svchost.exe taking up a lot of memory

Thread Starter
svchost.exe(Networking) is taking up a lot of memory and I don't know what the reason for it is. This seems to be recent however I cannot remember any specific software installation that would have caused this. The only thing that I have installed on my computer is KasperSky anti-virus. Below is a screenshot of the process in task manager. Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried restarting your computer? Sometimes svchosts bug out and cause this. Also try doing a in depth virus scan.

Try right clicking it and select "Go to service(s)". See what it is controlling and maybe one of those is causing the problem?

Sorry nate, I'm not seeing that. I'm using XP Pro SP2. I see "End Process, End Process Tree, Set Priority, Set Affinity"

Thats a vista only feature

Anyway, if all fails its only 100MB of ram.. I think youll be fine. You could try uninstalling kasperspy and see if it goes away if it really bugs you. I could see a anti-virus requiring more ram for the network services because it has to update definitions and scan for viruses as your browse websites.

I noticed this also. Never noticed svchost.exe taking up so much memory than a couple of days ago it was horrendous. Not sure what caused it either.

With as old as this is...it is still happening. I thought it was a Vista only problem but I see that XP users have it too. I just end the process and I get no stability issues and gain all my memory back. I guess you could try that and see what happens?
