Only Showing 256 MB RAM?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I posted a thread earlier about possibly overclocking a server I was picking up, well now i've got it and before I OC, i figure i should try to figure out why it only sees 256 MB of RAM.

Its a Dell PowerEdge 6650 with the serverworks chipsets in it and 4 1.6 GHz Xeons. Slots 1-8 have ECC 512 Sticks in each slot and slots 8-16 are empty.

For those of you not familiar with server hardware, there are two riser cards, each with 8 RAM slots on them. Each riser has 4x512 sticks in it.

Now, CPU Z sees each stick as a 512MB under the SPD tab, but the system is only addressing 256 mb. As for an OS, I'm running Win2K Advanced Server, which with PAE will address 8GB of RAM.

Any ideas? This thing's taking me for a sucker and its hard to do much of anything with 256 MB...

I'll be happy to post Pr0n of the 5 SCSI 10K drives that came with it if that's any encouragement to help me =)

Just thought i'd follow up and say that this issue is fixed.

For anyone having this problem, press F2 to enter setup when you get the 256 MB warning and scroll down in the Dell BIOS, there is an OS Install Option. Tick that to off and do a save/exit. You should be rockin' full capabilities on the next boot. Hope this can help anyone with this problem
