What is a good OC program for a 8600GT?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I was wanting to know what would be the best OC program for the Card i have, which is a xfx 8600 GT. I got tired of have the 7600gs, and had a spare 90 dollars, and want to upgrade to something better until I get the cash together to get a 9800. And trying to get the best FPS and everthing for games. I did a 3d06 bench on both and went from a 1917 to 4153. Not bad, and its a whole load better the what i had. But would like to OC it to get better. Anyone have this card and can give me the good settings to start at too?

I think that both RivaTuner and ATI Tool will work.

...you could start at the stock clocks. ...not trying to be a smart-arse...

I use ATITool on my 8600GT, but RivaTuner works as well. If you plan to overclock, I recommend spending the $30 on a Coolermaster Coolviva Pro SE HSF. With aftermarket HSF I was able to get my 8600GT to 700 on the core and 855 on the memory without volt modding. After I volt modded to 1.6V Core and 2.10V Memory, I was able to get up to 920 on the core and 940 on the memory, giving me a score of 7,909 in 3DMark06 so far, running stable for about 6 months now. With the aftermarket HSF, volt mods, and overclocking, this thing idles ~38-41*C and doesn't go above 60*C under full load.

When you start overclocking, make sure your fan settings are good (i.e. not set very low), and just start at the stock clock and increase in 5-10 MHz increments until you reach your max clock. Change the core and memory separately (find your max core first, then find your memory, you'll probably have to lower one or the other slightly to get it stable). Make sure you scan for artifacts for a long while (a few hours at least) to make sure you won't have any problems later on down the line. Overclocking is easy, but you can mess up your card VERY quickly if you get too hasty. Search for a good FAQ and follow it closely (as much as I'd like to I don't have time to write out a step-by-step...there are plenty FAQ's on this forum, just got to search).

How the heck did you get that low of a score. I got a 5464 with a 8600GTS OC (no volt mods)...and about 4900 at stock speeds. (This is on my sig rig, but with a 8600GTS).
I have a VF-900 on it. 49C at 737/1048

I just used nTune....everybody says it is bad. But it worked just fine for me.

I didn't like nTune cause you can't save your settings at reboot. Rivatuner works great though.
