Help! Slow Raid 0!

Thread Starter
I have 2 Seagate 7200.10 320GB's in Raid 0 (128 Stripe). I just ran HD Tach and can't break the 100mb Barrier! My burst speed is only 120mb with 2 hard drives! I've double checked the drives, and both the jumpers are off the drives to enable 3gbps. I also have fairly high CPU usage @ 13.8%.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Thanks for your time!

- Chris

I had horrible write speed when one of my drives was failing.

Your burst speed is a bit low, but 100mb is about where the read/write speeds should be.

How long are your SATA cables?

It's your stripe size IMO. If you try it with 8 K, or 32 K, you'll have better performance. Trust me, i knowz, i'm running RAID 0 on the same hard drives.

This makes sense but mine defaulted to 64k so I left it there. I imagine it is something that the OP could test at different settings to see which are better.

I also would not be completely sure that HDTach is what matters. Real life performance must be pretty good at the speed you have now, right?

If you go to the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, right click on your RAID volume and enable Volume Write-Back cache, that should boost your scores tremendously.

Before I enabled it, I was getting 125MB/s burst, now I'm getting over 1300MB/s burst. Of course, those are inflated numbers due to write-back cache performance, but overall I can see my RAID-0 being faster with it enabled.

it also makes a difference in that he's running an nvidia chipset as compared to your intel (which can enable write cache back)

We already had this conversation in his other thread. He has an nvidia chipset and does not have the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. And his setup has those options greyed out in the device manager for some reason.

EDIT ++ my bad. I can't find his other thread. But I know I remember posting in it. All the specs were identical to this one. Maybe it was deleted. Or maybe I'm crazy. Never the less the answer to the question is the same.

Before anyone says that nvidia doesnt allow those options, I have them so that I can turn then off and on on my 650i.

The performance is good, but I feel it should be better. I've been looking at toms hardware raid scaling charts (link below) as a reference.
http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/07/...ts/page10.html

They have two similar 320gb 7200rpm Samsung drives dishing out ~150 read/write speeds.

On a side note, I re-ran my HD test with 128kb block size and it upped the speed to 132mbps. So I'm not that far off now, but any tips on optimizing are
still very welcome!
