Well, an 8600GT uses different micro-architecture than your 8800GT not to mention a different core, so although their core speeds may be a little higher than yours (an 8600GTS has some sick high core clocks, 700+), but they are still slower due to the way they are built.

Think of it like RAM, what is faster? DDR2 PC2-6400 with timings of the 4-4-4-8 @ 800Mhz, or DDR2 PC2-8500 with timings of 5-5-5-18. Although the timings of the 800Mhz stuff is faster than the 1066Mhz, the 1066 is still faster due to it's faster clock.

No matter what your 8800 will out perform any 8600 at its stock clock speed.

Very true. I'm volt modded and overclocking my 8600GT 256MB at 920/940 right now (stock 540/700) with aftermarket air cooling, but that still only gets me to 7909 in 3DMark06 and medium settings in Crysis. Your 8800GT stock whoops the hell out of my "fully modded to the max" 8600GT. But hey, I only spent $130 total, and it's plenty for what I do with it.

Although, might as well firstly say that artifacts are normally caused by two things: it's overheating, or your card has hit its max clock (on stock voltage), so take those two into account as well.

Without a volt mod I would say the limit is gona be 725 - 750 core,1750 - 1800 shader and 1000 - 1125 memory.I have 2 of those cards and 1 does a little better than the bottom of the ranges I just give you and the other does the top of those ranges so I settled for what you see in my sig
