Thinking about getting a console...but which one?

Hey guys,

I spend 90% of my free time building, fixing, and tinkering with PCs; mainly gaming systems. I usually prefer gaming on the PC but it's getting to be a sort of a hassle keeping up with drivers, patches, and hardware. I have a pretty robust system and I was almost ready to buy a 9800GX2 when a thought struck me. I could buy that $600 video card when a 360 and PS3 cost $400 (avg) and $500 (80GB). I've decided to stick with what I have in the PC dept until my money yields a more significant upgrade.

I have a relatively nice home theatre setup: a 56" Samsung DLP (720p), a decent 7.1 Yamaha receiver, and some JBL satellites. I had a 360 before I sold it to my sister cheap (she couldn't afford one for my nephew) and I REALLY liked the Media Center capabilities; probably more than gaming itself. I do freelance photography and clients really like seeing proofs on a 56" slideshow.

With HD-DVD dead, the PS3 is looking sweet since it has the media linking capabilities AND Blu-Ray support.

Then again, the 360 merges so nice with a PC (duh..Microsoft + Microsoft) and it's roughly a hundred cheaper.

Gaming-wise, I really like third-person action and RPG the best on consoles. MMORPG, FPS (I'm a WSAD junkie), and RTS games are sooo much better on the PC. Games like Ultimate Alliance and God of War are what I really miss playing. I also like games like Forza, Gran Turismo, and DiRT. As I hinted at eariler, I can live without the Halo games.

This is where I'm at in the decision making process. Hoping you guys can add to it....

Thanks!

i was in the same predicament about a month ago. i went with an xbox (mainly for the MC extension) but also because xbox has a larger number of games to choose from. given i only have 3.

in my mind microsoft just made it too easy to transfer/stream files form the pc to the xbox. i know it would work on the ps3 but i didn't feel like taking the time to look into it. as easy as some might say it is (for the ps3), it cant be easier than the xbox. plus i would much rather spend my time tinkering on my computer than worrying about wheather my ps3 is gonna be able to connect and work flawlessly with my computer when i really need it to. who wants to get off their couch to troubleshoot a console problem?

the blue-ray thing is cool with the ps3, but personally, all the movies i get, i download (its just how things are done now) so i wasn't worried about it, i bought an up-converson dvd player (aka one with a HDMI) and it suits me fine.

my opinion is go with the xbox. i forgot to mention that your MC remote works with it, which makes life soo much easier.

i'd say with blu-ray support and this years exclusives the ps3 would be your best bet at the moment. especially if you're looking for a complete media device for your room. My PC has become somewhat secondary when it comes to movie watching and game playing now. Nothing goes as well together than a HDTV and a PS3 imo. But if you're looking for games that arent on the PS3 then you might have to check out the 360. Do that and then decide =)

just look at the game exclusives lists coming out thats how i decided to buy my 360 bout a year and a half ago, and ill get a ps3 in october for my birthday when they have a decent lineup of games out.

For current games though 360 is your best bet by far IMO

I would go with the PS3. It has blueray, many new game titles coming out, and quality control is better (no ring of death at least that I know of).

Just look at which games each console has. I have both, and I love my PS3 more than my 360. Watching movies on my 360 sucks. It is loud, and occasionally I will get a slight skip in my DVD, where I have never had that on my PS3. Blu-ray is nice, bigger HDD, built in wi-fi, free online. Also when looking at the games, keep in mind what is coming out in 08. Don't look at 09 yet, because it is too early. From what I see, the PS3 has many potentially "console selling" games coming out, where 360 has 1 Gears of War 2, which I will be getting. But PS3 is looking a lot better. Also it is outselling the 360 every week this year.

If you want fun and have a lot of friends over a lot I would say get a wii. But if your a solo gamer get a ps3 or a 360.

I would say Wii. Just cause it's not anymore only buttons , but motion.

And it's cheapest. If you want more , get Wii and Xbox .
