Noob overclocker questions

Thread Starter
Is it possible for a noob to overclock the q9450 CPU to about 3.2/3.4ghz with Asus P5K-E WiFi mobo (noob overclocker = not changing too much stuff)?

If so can anyone provide a link to a guide which will show me how?

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes you should be able to so long as you do not exceed the thermal specs of your CPU and 1.36 volts on your CPU (make sure you install cpuz so that you check your real voltage there, and coretemp to check your temps). Stress test your o/c for stability using Prime95.
Have you gotten your chip yet? If so post a screenshot of your o/c man!

Ouch only an 8 multiplier, i reckon on most performance boards 3.6Ghz would be the max

450 x 8 = 3600

N no

You gotta have some experience to overclock that far, read through some of the guides on the forums

Asus makes a great board for playing in the BIOS so take your time and start out slo. I took my CD2 E6750 all the way up to 3.6 on the stock cooler and ran stress test temps got up to around 65-67 under load. Fill out your system specs so we can see what you have to work with.

With the right power supply and memory you should be able to get the numbers your looking for. I set my memory 1-1 to run at 3.6 and boosted my CPU volts to 1.45 also moved the FSB(front side bus) from 333 all the way to 450 then the memory volts to 2.2 and set my memory at 800 before I ran the test. I just need a better cooler for now so I backed it down to 3.2 and let it run.
As I moved the FSB up the memory also went up. My memory went from 800(400 dual channel) to 900(450 same as FSB). One post in OCing the Pentium chips tells to take baby steps as in only raising FSB 10 here then seeing if the system will post then ten more until you find a limit. I have just started to have fun figuring it out and I am sure you will also.

Nah, haven't got the q9450 yet, just thinking about buying one. If I can't get it to ~3.2ghz with a normal air cooling system (Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme + fan & another case fan) I might go for the E8500 instead (even though it's dual core). I won't be going past 3.6ghz, don't even think I want to past 3.4ghz.

Currently planning to get this:
*Nividia GeForce 8800 GTS G92 Model (512MB) DDR3

*Intel E8500 Core 2 Duo 380 (Dual Core)
OR
Intel Q9450 Core 2 Duo 460 (Quad Core)

*Asus P5K-E WiFi motherboard

*2 x 2gb kingmax RAM 800mhz

*SATA 750GB, 7200 RPM, 16 MB Cache SATA II

*Coolermaster RC-690 case (is this a good case?)

*corsair hx-620 PSU

*Pioneer DVD RW: 20 X Black OEM No Software

*Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme + Case Fan (for the heatsink)

*Additional Silent Case Fan
