What PSU?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to find a PSU for my current rig:

CPU: q6600
RAM: 4GB
2 DVD drives
HDD: 320GB
upgrading to 8800GTS GPU

The PSU must have the 80mm rear cooling fan. My case doesnt have a top fan opening. I've been having trouble finding one with enough amperage on the 12V rail to meet the requirements of the GPU (I was told it needs 26A), and the right size for my case (Dell midtower).

Personally, I would go with one of these three brands, Pc Power and Cooling, Silverstone, and Corsair. They all have great reputations as stable and worthwhile power supplies. I would also consider going with a single beefy 12V rail over multiple, all of these will power your rig just fine.

Modular:

Corsair 620Watt with 3 18Amp 12V rails ($114.99 after $25 MIR, $104.99 with use of new Google Checkout account.)

Silverstone Decathlon 650Watt with 54Amp 12V rail ($154.99)

Regular:

Corsair 650-TX with 54Amp 12V Rail ($96.99, $86.99 with new Google Checkout account.)

Pc Power and Cooling 610W Continuous with 49Amp 12V Rail ($119.99)

Pc Power and Cooling 750W with 60Amp 12V Rail ($169.99)

Silverstone 700Watt with 58Amp 12V rail ($144.99 after $20 MIR)

Silverstone 750Watt with 60Amp 12V rail ($149.99 after $20 MIR)

I know that may be a lot of options, but just narrow it down to the price you want to pay and which one you like the most as they are all QUALITY PSU's. Hope this helps.

Those were pretty much the group that I was looking at. I really like the pc power and cooling PSU's, but the silencer series is too long for my case. Only the turbo series will fit but I can't find where to buy those. The silverstone PSU's will fit, but they dont have a rear exit exhaust fan. Would it be a bad idea to have the top 120mm fan point downward in my case?

If I am reading your sig rig right it's a Dell case? Meaning the PSU mount is up top right? It's fine to have the fan blowing down as long as you have an exhaust fan in the rear as well.

Yeah it's a Dell case and you're right, the PSU is in the upper rear corner. I do have a fan blowing out the rear of the case below the PSU so I'll probably go ahead with one of the choices you mentioned above. Thanks guys

While Skeletor has picked out some very high quality PSU, I don't think you need that much power. For a single card, a 400-550W PSU is more than enough.

You really can't beat the price on the Corsair 550VX at buy.com right now. $65 for a top of the line PSU with 41A on a single 12v rail and a 5-year warranty.

It has enough power, current, and 6-pin connectors to run two 8800GTS in SLI with plenty of headroom. It can easily handle just one.

That's how they're supposed to be installed. They draw the air from the inside of the case then exhaust it outward.
