8800GTX Sli or GX2 - Page 2

Thread Starter
Ya..saying the GX2 doesnt oc well is just plain stupid, to go from 600/2000 to 750/2200 is pretty damn good. Ya im leaning towards the GX2. Its pretty impressive all the benchmarks with drivers still in its infancy. So your getting hardware that can still get 5-10% improvements in time. I think with my specs my only bottleneck would be the videocard,

On a side note, anyone with the 780i have you guys done anything to fix the NB cooling problem? if so what did you do and how are your temps after, mine are around 50c and everything else(cpu and ambient temps) is 30c.

Id rather have one good card then 2 mediocre cards.

I don't think it wise to buy more than one card at a time.

I am all stock on my NB, doesn't get that hot to be honest. The EVGA 780i does though. Probably all change though when i stick those 2 beasties in my rig.

Get a GX2, look at the benchies/test's. GX2 = win over SLI GTX's in most cases.

Indeed, it will

To all others:

Please look at the benchmarks. One gx2 does not even come close to a score of 2 8800GTS 512s in SLI, and its the same core, even newer revision. 8800GTX has already a higher scoree then a single GTS512 (i know i know, 10%), so 2x 8800 GTX > 9800gx2. As im sure you all are aware of, putting 2 cores on a single card causes a lot of performance decrease (20-30%) from the 2 cards which the card is taken from in SLI. Again, this has been the case with the 7950gx2, and is even with the 3870x2. If you want Quad-SLI, 9800gx2 is for you. But again, 2x 8800GTX > 9800gx2.

I'm going to get the second 8800GTX instead of the gx2. The performance gain of a gx2 is going to be minimal to 2 8800's in sli plus the gx2 is $599.00 and you can get a Evga 8800GTX from there B-stock for $299.00 right now.

whitecrane sounds bitter....why would you call anything in the 8800series mediocre?

on a side note, would getting a 24" monitor improve my FPS since it would be running a higher resolution, 1920x1200 and stress the more powerful card. Would 1680x1050 bottleneck a GX2?

24" will be more trouble for the gx2 then the one you have currently. (I'm guesing 21-22"). The reason is simple, although it is stated that the gx2 has 1gig of RAM, the ram is devided between 2 cores, therefore each core in reality only has 512MB of RAM in disposition as the image buffer. That is low for 19200*1200. Another thing why a GTX would be better, it has more ram in reality

Dunno what benchies you been reading, but SLI GTS isn't really beating the GX2 by much at all. Considering a GTS has a seriously higher clockspeed and shader than that of a GX2 G92. It's SLI scaling, the 9 series and the 7series mobo's seem to be quite enhanced over conventional SLI. Whether it's to do with a more streamlined product or PCI-E 2.0. Hard to say....

Currently, the main issue with the GX2 is a driver bug when using AA.
