(SOLVED) Help Needed! OS doesn't recognize new SATA HD on install

Thread Starter
My boyfriend is trying to add a new SATA hard drive to his computer that will replace the existing two IDE hard drives so that he can use the IDE connection for his optical (which currently he has to swap back and forth between one hard drive and optical if he needs optical). He is running Windows 2000 Pro and does not want to change his OS to anything else. (yeah he's stubborn that way).

He install the new SATA drive as a secondary drive (so he can ghost the data over from the primary drive/copy the secondary drive). He has it set up in BIOS okay but the OS is not recognizing it.

He tried to install SATA drivers to the OS and reboot.. still no go.

Suggestions? He's going to drive me crazy until he gets this fixed lol

EDIT: SOLVED. After several hours wasted trying to 'copy' or 'ghost' his original drive over to the new hard drive, he finally treated the new hard drive as a new install and reinstalled his O/S and programs fresh (like I suggested from the beginning). This is kinda like getting lost and refusing to stop for directions ...

Thanks for the help all =)

Have him go into bios and make sure the SATA ports are enabled and set accordingly. I know the manual mislabels the SATA ports, so have him enable all of them.

I just did the same thing, lol. Hooked up the new drive with a USB adapter and it didn't show up. I freaked for a second until I realized that it has been a while since I bought a brand new hdd and that they don't come formatted (like the used ones do )

Ericeod, it wasn't being recognized by windows so doing that didnt' even show the drive to format it. That's the problem. Bios said it was there but OS did not show it. Once he can get it to show, he will format it lol

Update.. he put it in as a single drive (taking both of the others out) and formated and installed the OS on it and then put his original drive back in with the new one as secondary and now OS recognized the new drive as secondary. Once it was put in as a new install for C drive it was fine. Werd.

now he just has to do the monkey business of ghosting the original C drive over to it, then transfer the data from the original D drive over so he can just have it all on the new drive and just use it.

Thanks for the tips tho guys I appreciate it!

Okay found another issue in this saga...

his original C drive is disc 0 and the disc config says its a basic disc and it says his new drive is disc 1 and its a dynamic disc. Windows My Computer does NOT Recognize the new disc but going thru the control panel thing does. And it keeps asking for him to upgrade to dynamic disc .. I don't know anything bout dynamic v. basic. What is the difference and is there something we need to do ? I'm lost.

When he reboots bios is also making him go to set up... sigh

If he has both installed and sets the boot priority to the original hdd, then go into disk management and reformat? As far as I know, it should be a basic disk. Dynamic is used for RAID (I think)

Can he use a dos disk and reformat in dos?

I'm not sure what he did but he got it reformatted and its recognizable now. And of course I cannot find my old copy of Ghost for him to ghost his original C drive to the new drive. I must have lent it out to someone and never got it back.
