Help: Broken External HDD

Thread Starter
My cousin dropped his external hard drive and it no longer works. He says it makes a clicking noise and he can't access any of the files. Best Buy and Circuit City want over $200 to get the stuff off. They said they would take the actual drive out of the casing to see if they could get it to work. Is there any way for me to get the stuff off myself for him without him having to pay upwards of $200?

The only way they could get the info off is to send it to a specialist who would remove the platters and place them in an exact drive.

The only thing Best Buy can do is remove the drive from the external case (it is a standard HDD inside a plasitc case with a USB and power adapter board) and plug it diectly into a computer SATA or IDE port, depending on the type of HDD used. So you can try that yourself. But if it is making the noise you described, it doesnt sound good...

Try removing it from the case, it could be damaged (the case), but the HDD itslef could work fine, then hook it up to your computer, and check to see if it works at all.

If it still is making the clicking sound, that might be it for the actual drive.
