Vga/hd?

Alright so vga cables are the blue cables. I use that on my dell 22". Now is that playing on its best setting using a 1600X1050 res or can i use the white cables, hdmi or whatever they are and get a better resolution.

Sorry kind a a noob at this stuff, just learning.

The white cables are DVI they have much better clarity than VGA cables (the blue ones)

I put the plugged the DVI cable in, and changed my screen to DVI - D, but my monitor must not read it because it just enters power save and doesn't show anything.

Help?
