BOOTMGR Deletion?

Thread Starter
My friend is having a little trouble with his computer. Last night when he went to install SP1 for vista he got the message "service pack cannot install, reverting changes". After that it would be an endless loop of restarts. He tried to reinstall vista and now gets the message on the partition/format screen and windows says that he cannot install it on that drive (boot manager could not be loaded).
He picked up a new drive and it says the same thing.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

How was Vista re-installed?? Was it from an image or from a DVD???

If its from a DVD, the most probable culprit here is the Vista disc is corrupted or it just needs some wiping... Another probability is that your friend did not format the drive before installing Vista.

If its from an image, then probably its corrupted.

Other things you can do is try to remove all other peripherals such as USB devices modems, etc. Just leave the basic parts for installation. Namely, mobo, video card, RAM, HDD, DVD-drive, Keyboard, mouse and monitor...

He formatted the drive before trying to reinstall it, when it hits 1% it restarts. He is using the vista DVD.
Everything is disconnected except for the basics. Still getting the messages.

Hmmm... Well the possibility of data corruption on the DVD is large... Can you try resetting CMOS and clearing NVRAM??? Not sure how clrear NVRAM on your system, but on mine its automatically done when I reset CMOS.
