That was a helpful post, I'm sure the OP learned a lot from your insights.

I would also reccomend the Equation Audio RP-21 if you needed to lower your budget to also buy a sound card (which any headphones you buy will benefit from). They are commonly seen as the best bass in a sub-$100 headphone, and as an owner of them myself I happilly agree with that claim.

No - your iPod will not have enough power to drive the Beyers with quality, perhaps not even to listenable volume levels. You'd need some sort of amp (and will even with a nice soundcard in order to provide them the current they need to sound thier best)

There are several versions of the DT770, make sure you get the Pro 80.

The DT770's need an amp to run from your ipod, and more then likely an amp fro m your sound card too. They need some power, even for the pro 80 verisons to pump the bass, sorry to inform you.

As for the type of headphones you want, closed back is your best choice. Do not get open back, as they are more airy for soundstage purposes. The ATH-A700's aren't quite bassy, I own them and prefer richer bass, the bass is difined but the quanitity of it is not high. The DT770's are your best bet, but I would invest in a sound card first. Most places carry DT770s' around the 180$ range though.

Edit- chipp, damn you for typing faster

Edit: Apparently I need an amp too, so any recommendations there? Oh and +rep for all of those who helped
