I need myself a dedicated folding rig for the team lol

I keep messing with my rig and something happens and I get stupid downtiem over and over

Windows 7.. then MSN messanger apparently causes BSODs now (woot), and now I keep getting these 20hr units that take forever to finish, and then gaming.

Lulz... I wonder what a dedicated rig would cost....
A lot

After running P95 over night, it wan with no errors at 3.7ghz for 9 1/2 hrs. Only problem is that it needs more vcore than I would like. In the bios it's set to something ridiculous like 1.65v and idle in windows it's a little over 1.6v. While I was running P95 it dropped to 1.53v under load, but right now using f@h it's at 1.57v since it doesn't fully stress my chip.

I'm thinking either lower the vcore to where under load it's at 1.53v or just up the mhz a bit. I really don't like the second idea much since I have no clue how much vcore I need to be stable at that speed. My third option would be to volt mod my MB to reduce vdroop.

All this hassle for maybe 100ppd. Right now fahmon shows 3331 ppd.

I wouldn't run over 1.525v folding full time personally, but I don't have water cooling. Also anything over 3.5ghz should do you to a really nice place, and as I said above try out a version of linux if you really want to kick butt.

A folding rig doesn't have to cost alot. Here is a good break down.

(1) Gigabyte micro board with onboard video = $50

(2) Used E8400 = $130

(3) 500w PSU = $50

(4) Gskill 2GB set $40

(5) h/s = $30

(6) used h/d = $30-$40

No need for a case, but I'm sure you can pick up a cheapy for $45

So you see, it's not that bad really.

I can even beat that.

There is a rosewill case that uses 120mm front and rear fans, that is like 29 bucks shipped.
E8400 used(C0) $120 - $135 if E0
Gigabyte P35 - $55 shipped
Put a wanted for a low end graphic card, I have picked several up for $20 shipped.
Gibs hit the prices on hdd's and heatsinks.
I would ask for a psu, I found a thermaltake 500w for $22 shipped.
As for ram, you could easily get away with 2x512 if you run xp or Linux(hell linux you could probably get away with 2x256 lol).

I know what you mean about the vcore, I'm kind of hesitant myself. Today is kind of like an experiment day and going back and forth on just settling at 3.6ghz like I had it. It only needed 1.48v at 3.6ghz. Temp right now are not even a problem, my highest core is at 55°c. When I was running P95, temps were high, but not now. My concern really is the vcore.

BTW, I'm using error10's vmware linux thing. I mentioned it before buy maybe you missed it. I really wanted to shorten the gap between the high dual core people. I'm trying to be competitive here, but my chip isn't letting me

Dan is absolutely right. Ranger, Lemans, Gibson, Danbeme32, myself, and a few others get the max points with an E8400, E8500, or an E8600. I saw quite a few over on eBay. In fact the best E8400 I ever got was from eBay. (but then I'm very selective about getting a golden batch #)Good luck!

I wouldnt need a case, I can assemble a container from some plywood and posts

here is what I might do though

Buy the following parts:
Quad core Q9650 when I get the money
Buy Mobo, PSU, NVIDIA based GPU for folding too, cheapest 2GB or so kit
I already have two HDD's that are PATA and IDE respectively

Ill put the quad in my sig rig then send my prized E8400 to the dedicated rig for dual core folding then assemble the folding rig

Lets contemplate cost!

Q9650 is anticipated to be $330 shipped with recent "insider news"
P35, P45, or similar midrange chipset board supporting at least two PCI-E cards... $60?
Might go for 8800GS or something for like 50$
Some kind of DDR2 kit that will be able to match the required FSB for my E8400... $40-50?

Gib's plan would run under 300

Mine is just under 500... hmmm

but then theres that case mod i wanted to do

and a second GTX 260

Well if you don't want to try linux, then try running the Vmware+ubuntu guide by balwolf, I have zero experience with error10's but I know he aims to have it set up for a simple a computer as can run, you can mess with the settings on balwolfs.

All this talk about 4ghz + dual cores is getting to me. I think I'm about ready to pull the trigger on an E8400 for $150 shipped off ebay. Brand new and E0.

That sounds like a GREAT idea. You will definitely be a POWER FOLDER then

If you need any help, contact Lemans, Ranger, FreeRoller, or me. We know that chip really well
