5200+, how to overclock?

Thread Starter
Hi! I am new in here and i couldnt find similar treahds, that would tell how to overclock my 5200+. My other specs are:

-2gb kingston 667mhz (Type :DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5200
Frequency :326.5 MHz
DRAM/FSB Ratio :CPU/8
Supported Channels ual (128-bit)
Activated Channels ual
ECC Diagnostic :No
CAS Latency (tCL) :5 clocks
RAS to CAS (tRCD) :6 clocks
RAS Precharge (tRP) :6 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) :18 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) :26 clocks
Command Rate :2 T )

-Asus m2n motherboard
-Ati x1950pro graphics card
-HEC 400w power supply
-320gb western digital hard drive.

So i know how to overclock my x1950pro, but i have never overclocked any CPUs. Therefore if someone could explain me how the latencys work in memories, where can i "grow" the fbs, and all the basic stuff with am2 processors, thanks!

edit: my core temps are between 30-35 in idle, and motherboard around 35celsius and processor temp is around 27celsius idle, i havent tested yet the max temps.
My x1950pro has gone around 100mhz(core)/200mhz(memory) better than normal clocks, and temps were about 70celsius max.

HI and WELCOME to OCN
Keep the full load temp below the low 50c range.
Some RAM sub timings may help..
tRC: 22-26
tRFC: 105 or 127.5
Async: 6-9 (try 8)
Also, the Chip set of if separate, South Bridge gets a bit voltage hungry at the higher end of the CPU OCing. I've found when its under powered, it can cause RAM errors even though the RAM is stable.

On the Video, check out the video card section and if you need to, post on your card there

Ok, well I'm not familiar with those mem. clocks so could you explain how they work, what difference they make, and what i have heard that if you put too much clocks the comp. wont start and i'd have to take the small battery of my mainboard to reset it, but, does it reset the hole bios? because i dont know how to put it back together if its reseted :/
I have found the place to rise my fbs, so should i try to rase them like 10mhz or so and then check the temps and stability? and somebody said to me that if I rise the fbs it might rise the PCI-E also?

Sorry that i dont know much about these things but nobody dont want to help me here in finland

So could somebody put here basic Faq what i should first do and so one, I would be very happy if someone could.

I am just looking for somewhat small overcloking, with basic cooler.

Thanks for the tips, now my specs are in my signature.
I am trying to learn from the link that winginit gave, but it will take some time cos my english aint so good in computer words

in load my max core temps were 44 and 45 (orthos has been runnin now for 30minutes). and my original cpu voltage is only 1,2v!?
and then, i cant find the HT multiplier anywhere on the mobo. **** i tried to look for it about 15min and nothing :/

ok, so here are my first results, my mobo. went only 244mhz@HT multiplier 2, all maxed out so my mobo. aint good. Now I''m overclocking my cpu, so far HT is original and i have given 208mhz and isolated all the other components, now lets see will the mobo come my enemy

The max reference clock you were able to reach was only 244MHz? That doesn't seem right, my ASUS M2N32 SLI-Deluxe was able to reach 360MHz stable, and I assume the M2N can reach at least 300MHz. There's no reason to have a 2x HT multiplier when the reference clock is only 244MHz. This yields an HT Link of 488MHz, which is way below the recommended 1000MHz. Try setting the HT multiplier to 4x and see if the reference clock can go higher.

What are your other settings? (i.e.: CPU multiplier, CPU voltage, memory setting, memory voltage, memory timings). I'm willing to bet one of those is incorrectly set and giving you some trouble.

As for your temps at around 45*C at load with the stock cooler, that makes sense. My X2 4200+ was at 58*C under load at stock settings with the stock cooler. You're probably going to need to invest about $25-30 in a better CPU cooler if you want to get a good overclock.

Well my cpu multiplier was 5, cpu voltage at basic (1,2v), memories were 5-5-5-18-26-2t,memory voltage 1,8v, memorysetting was btw on automatic, :/
I only can change my HT multiplier by 1000,800,400,200!? On 800 it went only 224mhz and then my comp. were not able to start win. and asked me to lower the clocks?

Latexi, if you can, please download CPU-Z and post up screenshots of each tab. This should give us a better understanding on where you stand at. Post up screenshots of your most recent stable OC.
Keep your CPU multiplier at 13x and just raise the HTT (reference clock). Take your memory off of "Auto" and manually drop it to DDR533. Dropping the memory will give you some more OC'ing room. When you start overclocking your processor your memory frequency is also overclocked and when the speed goes above stock that could cause some instability issues. Like Durch suggested, run your HT multiplier at 4x or 800mhz.

Good luck
