Troubleshooting Family Comp

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm trying to fix my family's desktop (Dell Dimension w/ Celeron D 2.53Ghz, 512MB RAM), but it's such a mess I don't even know how to go about doing it.

I've already gone through and removed horrible, pointless programs using control panel.

Also, McAfee is acting incredibly strange. It's saying the install is faulty when I boot up, but it was working fine when I was home last weekend. After I close out those dialog boxes, I repeatedly get "resource DLL is missing". If I close it, it comes back shortly. If I don't close it, it just steals focus every now and again (eight times so far since typing this). Hmm. Awesome. Apparently someone just tried deleting random McAfee files in the past week.

I don't have the re-install disc for it either. McAfee doesn't show up on Add/Remove programs, so it's not like I can just uninstall it totally and grab something else (like Kaspersky or something).

The computer itself is also running incredibly slow, which cleaning up programs seemed to help with a little bit, but it's still taking a lot longer than it should (down from like 3min to open Firefox to ~40sec).

My next plan is to run disk cleanup and a defrag, anything else I should do? I feel that there's a far more extensive problem though :-/

So, suggestions on what to do if clean/defrag don't help? Also, suggestions on the McAfee thing would be awesome.

Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, msconfig, disable things from starting at the startup, check for any viruses.

My friend, when it's that bad, you have to work hard to convince me not to reformat. How long has it been since that poor HDD went to the spa for a nice, long erase?

Seriously, your registry is probably corrupted to all hell, and McAfee is the devil. I would reformat and install AVG free antivirus. It's not the best, but it's a lot better than McAntiVirus with fries...
