The gameplay is not actually slow, it's more of the fact that it takes almost as much planning as your typical 4X title (not quite Side Meier-esque, but almost.)

It's slower than CoH obviously, Starcraft as well, but only slightly.

The scale is absolutely massive. I really can't believe it was a team of only 9 people that made the game that perfect. Not encountered one single bug. The only problem I have is a new-found lack of a social life on Friday nights.

The feeling I get when I played Half-Life 2 for the first time was akin to opening up "The Brothers Karamazov" or watching "Raging Bull" for the first time.

It's not about "Running around killing people" because #1, you're not killing "people", and #2, you're furthering the plot, not mindlessly "playing a game".

Less-so, but still the same with Bioshock, but there are points where the violence/gore is rather over-the-top.

Oh yeah, and I suppose the game should be rather open-ended so that no two passes through the entire game are alike.

That's the one thing I don't like about Freespace 2. Ya play it once, you play it a million times. I suppose it's probably like that with Tron 2.0 (the best game I own), but I'm still on my first time playing it.

Honestly, developers chirp about that and it rarely ever happens. Maybe 2 games I've ever played had that great of a branching dialogue path, and they were not even 3d.

Linear games with directed plots suit me fine. I'm one of those people that goes "***" when you're about to finish the final quest in Oblivion, and then you suddenly decide to leisurely stride around on your horse and come upon a unicorn....
