*Yet Another* First-time Q6600 Overclocker w/questions

Thread Starter
Hi Flolks,
I've gotten a huge amount of info from reading the other similar threads, but wanted to put up my results so far to get some feedback.

I've got a Q6600 Step B Rev G0, presently running at 3.061. For my numbers, I'm taking core temp from CoreTemp and CPU from Easy Tune (a Gigabyte utility). For Volts, Bios is from Easy Tune again, and core is from CPUz.

At Idle:
CPU volts are 1.340 in Bios, 1.328 in CPUz
23C CPU and 30C core

At Load:
CPU volts are 1.310 Bios, 1.296 CPUz
47C CPU and up to 56C core

Now, at this level, I can't get past an hour of Prime95 torture without one of the cores giving out. I was *relatively* stable at stock up until 2.9 Gig, but I didn't stress for longer than 30 min's. At 3.06, I couldn't go more than about 15 min at stock volts.

My concern is I've put volts up A LOT in one freq step, and can't get stable. I know I'm will under max limits, but I wanted to ask if this all looks within reason for where I am. I'm cooling with a Zalman 9500A.

Some other random questions I'd appreciate help with as well are:

1. Vcore - When talking about the max Vcore setting you have when stable, does this pertain to the Bios setting, or to the value the CPUz reports?

2. Temp - when talking abou the max temp, this is the CPU temp from (in my case) Easy tune, and not the CoreTemp values, correct?

3. Stepping - CPUz reports a 'Step' and a 'Revision'. When you say you have a 'GO Stepping', does that refer the the 'step' or 'revision' in CPUz? I have a Step B Revision G0 quad. Is that the prefered 'G0' everyone talks about, or is it the lesser 'B' that people dread having?

Thanks again for the help. For the moment, I'm targeting 3.2, just as a nice round number, then I'm moving on to OC'ing my GPU cards. Maybe I'll come back to the CPU a little later.

Temperature issues are normally caused by the following:

- CPU Cooler
- TIM application (too much)

I would use Core Temp as a reference for all temperature readings. Try to re-seat your CPU Cooler and apply else TIM and see if that effects your temperatures at all. Good Luck

I believe it is BIOS. For example, I just erased my pencil mod, and I have to set my VCore in BIOS to 1.4 to get a 1.36 reading in HWmonitor, which is the program I use to monitor my voltage. CPUz works great too though!

If I'm understanding you right, I think it's the max CoreTemp you want to worry about. My max core is usually 4 degrees hotter than the other cores. Easy tune, I think, gives you an amalgamated score. Again, HWmonitor and CoreTemp are better to go with than Easy Tune.

I think the revision in CPUz. G0 is the voltage stepping though, and you've got the one everybody wants.

3.2 is nice. Might need to set BIOS CPU Vcore higher, which is why I think you might be bombing out. Setting it at 1.42, for a Vcore load of 1.36 for example, is not unreasonable or dangerous.

As I read, I misunderstood you a bit. Stick with coretemp, and I find it best to report your max Vcore as reported in CoreTemp or HWmonitor, though it's still best to differntiate.

BTW, I don't think your temps look terrible... Though some here can run their 6600 at 3.6 with a 45C load temp... CRAZY!

depending on cpu, it all lingers there, after that it hinges on your cooling.
as for temps, Ive read conflicting, many conflicting opinions. CPU-Wiz 08 monitors your CPU Temp first then core #1 core #2 core #3 core#4. Some say its the CPU temp you dont want above 72 (with GO rev) and others say it the core temp.

Mine now nothing gets above 65

at 3240 with 1.425 (bios) voltage my core# 1 & core# 2 will hit 72 (Loaded), but my CPU temp stays below 65 core# 3 and core# 4 will stay at 65 as well.....

So Im just staying at 3150 (350x9) for now.

idle temps are CPU Temp 26
core #1 40
core #2 34
core #3 37
core #4 33

I have just recently pushed mine 3.15 on air.
+.1v on FSB and MCH (northbridge)
Full prime95 load I run at 50C, so I have a good amount of headroom to go.

Those temps don't look too far off though if you feel so inclined just reseat the heatsink with just a dot of thermal paste right in the middle. you can spread it with you fingers if you want or just press the sink down on top.

1. Setting in BIOS.

2. Temp is usually taken from CoreTemp

3. You're wanting to check out the "Revision" part of CPUz to see which one you have. If you see B3 under that, it sucks. If you see G0, you're good to go.

I got a B3...can't go much above 3Ghz

Thanks for the information everyone, I appreciate it!

I did some basic checking today, because I suddently couldn't hold stability for more than about 10 min's under load. It looks like all this stress testing shook out a bad stick of RAM which I managed to find with Memtest86+. So, I pulled the RAM, and bumped the clock up to 3.2 and have been running stable for almost 2 hours on OCCT. I'm down to 2 Gig of ram, but I'm stable as a rock so far.

Looks as follows:

Idle:
Temps 24 CPU and 32 Core
Volts 1.34 Bios and 1.328 CPUz

Load:
Temps 45 CPU and 52 Core (max)
Volts 1.31 Bios and 1.296 CPUz

I'll probably bump the speed up before I go to bed and let it burn in for the night to see what I find in the morning. I'll be sure to let you all know where I end up.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the feedback I got. I hit 3.4 stable last night, at about 1.35 Vcore (bios settings). I'll post specifics tonight when I get home, but Prime95 small FFT ran for about 12 hours, temps peaked at about 54 CPU temp and 62 vCore at max load.

Now, on to those video cards...
