800$ Build for friend. HELP!

Thread Starter
Hello OCN viewers! I'm helping (another) friend of mine out. His budget is 800$. I've assembled a build for him that looks like this:
https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion...ListTitle=Haya

Alas, with an e8400 on there, (which newegg gouges to 260$) it's over budget. I really need some help. I was thinking downgrading to a 9600GT, but I'd really like to have the 8800 in there...

Also, e8200 is a viable CPU as well, he wont be ocing.

Any great suggestions will be awarded .

Thanks!

The low budget computer I have built for myself and for friends in the past included an E4500. Its 124 bucks and it overclocks like a mad man even with stock cooling. 2.2Ghz stock - 3ghz OC'd with stock cooling and you'll be sitting under 50c under full load. Dont let the 2mb of cache fool you. I have hit over 16k in 3dmark running 2 GT's on a E4500 System.

Thats my recomendation.

Not a bad price...but that 8500GT is killing your system.

For 800 he can keep what he has an get a dual core E4500 and be in gaming nirvana.

His link works...and for the 2180 - a 4500 is quite a bit quicker and OC's better for a nominal price difference.
'
That and the 2xxx series isnt a Core2 architecture.

His link doesn't work for me

And he has $100 to play around with if he wants to take $50 and up to a E4x00 chip (which isn't a great improvement over the E2180 especially in games)

AND the allendales and conroes are c2d's so the same basic performance

It works, also, 2mb vs 4mb is the real difference between allendale and conroe.

some +rep has gone around, I've adjusted the build slightly so...whatever .

Thanks for correcting me...you are right.

But going from 1mb of L2 cache to 2mb of L2 cache yields a LOT bigger gain than going from 2mb to 4mb (allendale - conroe)

For some reason I was thinking the 2xxx series was just the repackaged P4 dual core chips.
