Im having a deliema right now. I want to go higher than 3.0ghz and i dont know which way would be cheaper. Should i contiue with my oc on my 5200+x2 and water cool it or should i get an intel cpu and mobo???

system specs as of right now:

275x11 3028ghz
vcore 1.45 temps full load 53/47c
ram 504.8mhz ddr800

You will be lucky to get higher than 3.2-3.3 for 24/7 use with any cooling. You could get a DS3L and an E2180 for $140 or so. That is less than a decent water cooling set-up. Also, you will get better performance from the Intel clock for clock. I went from a 3800+ F3 revision clocked at 3200mhz to an E2140 clocked at 3500 and it was a huge difference. (even when I tested with the Intel at 3200)

W/C'ing just your cpu could be cheaper than 200$..but so would buying a mobo and a e2160. Either way, really..what kind of use are you planning for this cpu? Why do you need/want more cpu power? Seems your system is a little, "light" in the gpu department.

I think, lapping your cpu, maybe re-work your fans a little..and buy a 8/9800 or something.

*the cpu related items in my w/c'ing loop total about ~275-300$ ..and will get you..what, 3.4ghz with your current cpu?

**a DFI Infinity Dark 965-s +e2180 = ~170$ and will easily OC to ~3.2-3.6ghz

I vote P35 + C2D

For the record, I got a pump, 240 rad and d-tek for $95 in the FS section here. Used is the way to go if you are on a budget. I agree with CL3P20, if you are gaming, look into a better GFX card. I chose water not only for OCing, but also 'cause it is fun. You can factor that in too

ive already had plans of going with a 8800gts g92 but my concern was the cpu bottle neck afterwards. Thats why i was considering going either intel or watercool the current cpu with plans to cool the gpu as well. I know nothing of intel cpu's and which ones to look for. I can say that after the gpu ill be willing to spend 250 MAYBE 300 if i do some serious pep talking to myself and from looking around on newegg it appeard to me that intel is kind pricey so i didnt know if there are cheaper cpus that could out preform my windsor's potiential.

The question is, will you need WCing with the Intel 45nm CPUs? As of now, the E8400s are maxing out on vcore with only 58°C on good air.

So it might be more cost effective in the long run to switch now to a P35 and an E8400 (microcenter has them instock for $199 now).

Also, keep in mind that the GTS G92 is only worth water cooling if you are planning a v mod. I went CPU only on my loop as I didn't want to mod my card and it runs quietly and cool enough with the stock fan. I do not think you would see an increase in clocks by water cooling it alone. You need to add more voltage to justify the extra restriction/temps the GFX card would add to your loop.

Also, ericeod is right, the new 45nm are failing due to voltage well before temp is an issue. If you are planning to get a 45nm CPU, I would look into decent air cooling as that is all that is needed. GL

thats a good point i didnt even think about that on the g92's. My buddy has one and we cant get any more out of it because of the voltages 750/1800/1000 i think is what we got.

well its seems that i have found my answer. Guess im gonna look into goin intel.... never thought id say those words.

i also just looked up my current cpu cooler and appearently it fits lga 775 sockets so theres my cooling solution
