Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 Beta

Anyone try the beta yet?

I think I'd like to go ahead and upgrade, but I'm hesitant... should I be?

I think the Wubi.exe feature will lure several of my friends from their Winholes.

Beta seems solid, but the official release is but a few weeks away. Just wait for it. Me thinks I will be skipping this release, because the stupid 2.6.24 kernel does no work on my machine. Can't wait until 2.6.25 comes out.

They broke some Nautilus packages for those upgrading from Gutsy.
I have a lot problems with the packaged software, though. FF3b4 is a slug compared to the quick speeds I got in b3. The new Eel package (an integral part of Gnome) had major code changes that made transparent background patches not work. Tracker I just plain hate, and they removed all things locate-related and I had to rebuild my slocate database, which took forever. They also forced Intel users to switch to the 'intel' X driver, which I wasn't originally going to do until DRI2 was done and working properly. The 'intel' driver is kinda slow compared to the 'i810' driver for my i945.

Other than all of those bugs, most of which should be fixed soon by their respective owners in some way, I'm liking a lot of the other stuff. The default installation of Compiz hasn't touched my git install (Gutsy kept writing extra files that compiz-manager would read that would kick it back to the old version of Compiz). There are some packaged Gnome apps with built-in RGBA colormap support, which is nice.

Anyway, overall, for a beta, this is really great.

The Alphas worked better for me, I get so many errors with the Live CD I don't even know where to start.

+ rep for all but this one. Usefulness please!

I'm enticed. Hopefully none of those compiz troubles will touch my nvidia drivers? Suppose I'll find out in a day or two and besides, if there's a problem I am actually very happy with 7.10.

I'm waiting for the final release, then I'll go ahead and try out that Wubi thing. I think being able to install Ubuntu right into the Windows partition without it harming anything is a BIG step forward. I can see this version getting even more attention, especially from people who aren't keen on the idea of messing around with partitions.

I love Ubuntu, but man, BSD ROCKS! It just makes more sense.

I will say, however, that it's preferred to wait for the final release for a permanent upgrade. 8.04 promises to be awesome, as Ubuntu usually is. Will Kubuntu have KDE 4?
