The tried multicores in the early 90's but it was too much of a pain to code for. Apparently it still is.

it makes perfect sense really, the growth of hardware is exponential, they will go from 64 to 128 in a few years too

i'm sorry but unless there are apps that can actually use all those cores then, i would go for it, but until then, i'll stick with a quad.
