First Time Overclocker: Q6600/Evga 680i Sli

Thread Starter
Greetings all! I've been reading the forums for some time now since I purchase and built my new computer. I'm extremely new to overclocking and I seem to be having some issues reproducing alot of the same numbers as you guys on here. I figure maybe someone can be my hero and kinda help me through my first time so I can get a better grasp of the skill that is overclocking that you guys have here. I've read the article on Overclocking on the 680I board, and some various q6600 stuff but I really can't reproduce any of these numbers, My best Stable OC so far is 2.7 ghz with 40C Temps and 45@ load (Crysis full graphics in my case)

Here's my Current Rig:
-Cosmos 1000 Cooler Master Case, 4 stock 120 mm fans, 1 Added Rosewell HD fan, Another sitting in a box, could replace one of the 120 mm fans
-700W OCZ PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341002
-2 Gigs of OCZ Sli-Ready ram Stock 4-4-4-15 1t timings @ 2.1 Volts http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227198
-Zalman 9500A LED CPU-Heatsink
-Kentsfield Q6600 stock 2.4, Revision B, Go stepping
-Evga Nvidia Nforce 680i SLI, (Good version forget which a or t that is)
-Zalman STG-1 Thermal Greese (After looking around several places this was claimed to be slighly 1-3C Cooler than Arctic Silver)

The Greese has been set in for about 2 weeks now so it should be set in, it was a nice fitting between hs and chip afaik.

I tried several of the configs on here as starter points after obtaining my 2.7 clock from Ntune Nvidia Software , then trying to slowly inch it into higher numbers causes me instability.

I just can't get the voltages for everything right or my ram timings or something, I'm really just at a loss because I find lots of similar builds w/o enough of the voltages to go off of =/. I tried a 3.0 for a while @ 1.275 core/1.3 bus, mem 2.150 , 2.2, 2.250, , Tried spacing the timings to 5-5-5-15-2t, 18, 6-6-8-20-2t, Tried differrent Ratio's for the Ram settings while tweaking my fsb but still nothing... 3-2, sync, sli max cpu, 5-4, etc etc. My main error is I'll get to window, it will finish completely loading, then freeze , No blue screen just a dead freeze, If someone could kinda help me along I'd appreciate it greatly. ty for your time everyone!

All updated I think, I had CPUZ, PCwizard08,3dmark06, Ntune, and HWMonitor for my current temping/monitoring along with prime95 for mem tooling but thanks for the others, I'll pick them, up. So how hopeless am I? lol

Hopeless... I think not

You have a pretty sweet rig that will soon become so much sweeter after you've pushed it to the edge

One thing I have noticed tonight is it seems that quads need vcore so what I would suggest is reading up on the other quad overclockers posts and seeing what they were running vcore etc....

Hmm.. But my problem isn't with temps or the core, I can boot into windows (At anything under 3.250 ghz) But After windows loads up, about 1.5-2 mins it , it freezes solid, Nothing I can do about it. It's never been a BSOD , always just a solid freeze =/, I was thinking it was a Ram issue since it always happened whenever I had the timing on the ram/mhz oc'ed at all, but the ram is made to be oc'ed , sigh...I feel like i'm in a giant loophole , I donno how you guys do this w/o a lot of asprin and something squishy to beat on.

I've Tried a 3ghz oc with Ram at Various 3-2, 5-4 etc settings and Synched (1:2) also , None of my timing work out, and I've tested Voltage starting from 2.1 up to 2.275 (maximum rating is 2.3 to my understanding but I'd prefer not to do that and don't think it's a good idea from what I've been reading so far =/ ) Always with the same results though Post - Boot - windows- 1.5-2 Mins, Freeze. Temp checks as I boot in show me at 45-49c depending on my OC amount

Thing is... just because you can boot into Windows doesn't mean you are stable... so I would suggest restarting your CPU OC and testing for stability and temps properly to ensure you have it stable... maybe leave memory stock at first... Once you have hit a sweet spot with your CPU and it is stable start working on the RAM... changing to many things just makes trouble shooting the culprit too tough... (you might even start by first installing Windows again and updating all your drivers...)

ok, i just replaced that board with the gigabyte in my sig. my experience with that board and the Q6600 are as follows. the highest i could go is 3.2, even at 3.2 the rig would freeze up every 2 1/2 days(i fold). the vcore was set at 1.35 in bios, ram volts was set at 2.1v, fsb was 1.4v, i cant recall the others just yet, i'll find a guide for you. the ram timmings were 5-5-5-15. i had the board for 6 months, had probs from the get go. alot of others have had very good luck with it, just not me. with my gigabyte board, i'm now rock solid at 3.4, i have been up to 3.6, just haven't got arround to dialing it in yet. i'll see if i can find you a guide for your volts.

edit: whenever in doubt, just look for ericeod, he has a guide for everyting! here is his guide

I have a 6600 on a 780i, very similar to yours. I would suggest two things for you. First of all, my windows would freeze when my Vcore just wasn't high enough. for a 3.2 OC, my Vcore reading in HWmonitor needed to be about 1.33. Your mileage may vary. I definitely think you're stalling out because of that, but as always, other factors may be at work.

I would also suggest you *investigate* the pencil mod. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=109636&mpage=1&key. I have it applied now, and the stability is improved in my rig. Apparently there's a risk to applying it long term, though exactly what this risk is and how it will affect you is unknown. I can't find a hard or fast answer as to what exactly will happen, but a lot of folks here apply the pencil mod with great success.

Food for thought, keep on tinkering.

So Far Here's My current Stable OC atm. I dialed in on these settings using NTune 5.05.54 software, All my drivers and bio are the most current version available, as is my graphics drivers atm.

Cpu Multiplier 9x
Reference Clock: 319 MHZ
Cpu Core Freq : 2,871 MHZ
FSB Frequency: 1,276 MHZ
Memory Bus Freq : 957

Memory Timings:
Tras - 13
Twr - 5
Trcd - 4
Trrd - 4
tRP - 3
tRWT -5
tRDRD - 3
tRC - 23
tWTR - 10
tWRWR - 2
Cas - 4
tCpC - 0

Voltages:

Cpu Core V: 1.281
Memory : 1.875
FSB : 1.2
HT Nforce SPP <-> MCP : 1.2
NForce SPP 1.250
nForce MCP: 1.5
Auxilery 1.5

HWMonitor Note my Max Temp after Load Testing at 58C
Avg is ~45C

PCWizard08 Score - 67749.36
3dMark06 - 11640

And Thats the most stable (IE 12 Hour Nvidia Stability test) I can get my current rig, Sorry for no CPU-Z Shots, When I have Ntune OC Profiles activated it give me an error saying it can't get the values.

I can't seem to Dial in any higher, Though I'd just like to be able to hit a respectable 3.0 ghz with this setup. Any help would be appreciated.

I love sticking my nose where it doesn't necessarily belong, so I'll give some advice

Your voltages for the North Bridge (SPP), South Bridge (MCP), and FSB look a little low. Are you using the auto settings by chance? I would recommend setting the FSB to 1.3, maybe 1.4, the SPP to 1.4, and the MCP to 1.525. Those should all be "green" values in your BIOS. Put your memory timings and speed to stock for now, so we can worry about those later. Also, confirm you are sending the RAM the voltage that it is rated for,

Once you dial that in, see if you are stable in windows, and then in Prime95. You will probably boot first, and then once in, Prime95 will fail until you give it enough Vcore. Watch your temps in HWmonitor. If it goes over 65C in the Prime95 blend test, you've got problems, and you'll have to dial it back.

Slowly increase your Vcore in increments until Prime95 goes for at least 15 - 20 minutes.

Throw ntune out the window. It's not great software for good overclocking.
