I went for it! (warning: long read this way)

When it gets right down to it, I'm a PC guy. I love searching for parts, getting everything together, and feeling good about a job well done. On the other end of the spectrum, I don't like how finicky driver support is at times and the cost of top-notch video cards (9800GX2 = $599 ) is insane right now.

I recently downgraded (no typo) my system in the name of reliablity. I use my computer for freelance photo work and I can't have it locking up all the time or jumping ship every couple months. I got everything dialed in and am very happy with the result. Fast enough for massive Photoshop jobs and everything else I do but now I'm left with a lonely 8800GTX (I had a liquid-cooled 780i/Q6600/8800GTX SLi rig before). Some of the newer games are really riding the fine line between playable and unplayable with that card. I looked at the GX2, had the Newegg page up, ready to order, and then it hit me. Why the hell don't I just put that money elsewhere...like in a console?

I had a 360 in the past and absolutely loved it. By far the best system I had ever owned. I didn't have all that many games but the ones I did have got played hard. Most of all, the Media Center interface impressed me. I could easily pull up recent photos and stream a new CD into the livingroom. I even showed clients proofs of my work before I delivered photos. I sold that machine cheap to my sister right before Christmas because she couldn't afford one for my nephew.

Now with Blu-Ray winning the battle, the PS3 was looking sweet also. I was so torn up by this decision I came on here and got some advice from some of you.

What did I end up doing?

PS3!! Here's why...

--Best Buy's cheapest stand alone Blu-Ray player is $399
--Some of my favorite games are God of War and Final Fantasy
--The PS3 is a better value even without considering Blu-Ray

That's what tipped the scales. Now that I have it home and have had the night to play around with it, I am in love with it! While the media interface isn't as Windows-tastic, it's just as good. Moving between menus, folders, and the like is much quicker. The sound is amazing through my Yamaha 7.1. There's a built-in web browser (I had no idea)!!! Blu-Ray even on a 720p DLP is nothing short of amazing. Upconverted DVDs look fantastic. The controllers are familiar and are rechargeable right out of the box. Wireless networking is built in and not an extra $90.

Whew...that's all I can think of right now. I won't say this thing owns a 360 because it doesn't; to each their own. I like it better so far but only time will tell.

Good choice! I made the same one a while ago. I love it on my 1080p lcd tv.

Congratulations!

...temperance does have it's virtues.

I really like the part where you stopped and thought about it...

....now if only I could do that once in awhile.

Heh! ... I am on the same wavelength as you - I have been eyeing consoles; only problem... I need a TV (a real one).

Enjoy your new Toy!
