According to EVGA, 8800 GTS requires a "Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply".

Its a good card, and that price isn't too bad at all ($130). But you WILL need a better power supply for it. And yes, if the power supply fails, it can take anything that's plugged into it with it. Better be safe than sorry.
Performance wise, I think that G80 GTS is slightly better than 9600GT. While it on the other hand, 9600GT manages power notably better.

I strongly agree with that PSU statment. Saddly, PSUs are commonly overlooked.

That minimum rating is also taking into consideration...that's a MINIMUM system with no overclocking? I'd recommend at least a good 500w or better PSU for ANY single card GPU setups today (except for the 8800GTX/Ultra's), with at least 30+a on the 12v rail. Even then, that would be pushing it. The Antec 500w 80Plus certified PSU is only what, $50 or so on newegg? Its a GREAT power supply when you're on a budget. If you can fit that into your budget, go with that.

A good quality, properly rated 400W PSU is plenty for a 8800gts and an overclocked CPU. I wouldn't try it with an <$50 Allied or Apevia cheapy, but if you're talking a reputable maker like a Seasonic, FSP, Antec, Enermax, something like that? I would say you will be fine. I've been running my system on what is technically a 400W PSU for years now, with high-end graphics cards and overclocked CPU's, with no problems. But it is a Seventeam-built unit, who build some of the best out there. Ultra PSU's, though, I must say, have never impressed me, based on the reviews I've read, they are a somewhat dodgy manufacturer.

Also, on a 1280x1024 display, a 320MB 8800gts is an excellent card, especially at that price. It should overclock pretty nicely as well, mine did 675/2000 and I got close to 12K on '06 with my e6550 at 3.1GHz. They're nice cards, as long as you don't exceed the available memory, they will run anything very smoothly.
