Recommend Me a Linux Distro

Thread Starter
For my sig rig. I want something relatively lightweight, fast, and somewhat easy to install. I've tried Ubuntu which was too slow for me and their Live CDs don't work half the time. I tried Sabayon which I thought was better but again, kind of slow. Slackware was alright, but is only i486. I tried Arch but spent all day and never got it fully up and running. I went over their wiki multiple times and google but didn't quite get there. It was mainly trying to get a working xorg file. So any suggestions?

Does it have to be 64-bit?

How about Fedora? Or Mint? Mint is very fast, but it's only 32-bit.

Debian is also very fast.

Don't get Suse, though, if you want fast. It's kinda slow, but that's the trade off for being easy.

Xubuntu?

Doesn't have to be 64 bit, but I would prefer it.

I've played with Fedora before and it was so-so. I'll test out Mint and Debian I guess.

I love the way Suse looks, with that green and KDE. Like you said not that fast.

You could also try FreeBSD (although it isn't exactly Linux). I've never had any luck installing it on any computer, though (seems to be some sort of incompatibility, but on 3 computers...)

I actually installed Suse again on one of my drives. Doesn't seem as slow now, probably because of my quad and 4gb compared to the core 2 duo and 2gb of ram.

Try Fedora

Fedora 8 is totally different than Fedora 7 or Fedora Core 6. They have come a long way over the last 2 releases.

I agree, very much.

And as for Suse: it was really, really slow when I used it in its 10.0 days. It has also come a long way since then (now it's 10.3), but it's still a bit slower compared to other distros.

if you want easy and relatively fast, go with mint. slack is good, suse is good (i agree on it looking awesome but kinda sluggish). if you can pull off the install, gentoo is decent.

http://distrowatch.com/search.php - use the search options and you should be able to find one in the list that sounds like it will suit your style.
