Macbook is the better choice of the two. Sony's have crappy battery life.

Both are more expensive compared to other brands, but of the two, the Apple is better.

The recent problems with sony's products made me stay away from them.

What recent problems would those be?

DRM Rootkits, Exploding batteries, proprietary formats/media etc etc
And their products are generally more expensive than similar ones from other companies.

If all you're going to be doing is office stuff like word processing and secretly playing flash games then go with the Mac, since they look cool and you have the option to dual boot Windows.

However you want to play games, watch movies, or anything remotely "fun", then get the Sony. Personally I don't care about battery life, because the longest time I ever go without power is basically the bus ride home from university, and if a laptop can't handle that then it has serious issues.

Happened once and they got harsh sued over it, could happen to any laptop, blu-ray already won, still cheaper than Macs.

Well I also want to use Photoshop and Illustrator. Pretty much it needs to do almost everything in terms of work except render 3D like Maya and such. Games are going to be rare on it as it will be mostly for work but a handfull of games would be nice in case I get bored. It is a really close call I say.

In this case I would go for a different brand and get something with discrete graphics. Dell makes a nice machine in the M1330 with an 8400GS; Asus makes several different types of machines with all sorts of graphics options.

If anyone has a better recommendation on a laptop that has many of the same features of the Sony let me know.

The LG P300 is a very nice laptop too.
It's got a Intel santa rosa 2.4ghz CPU, 250GB hard disk, 8600GS 256mb and 2 gigs of RAM.
The 4 hour battery life is nice too.

Some specs:
