Need help optimizing Dell Inspiron 6000

Hey chums,

My girlfriend's laptop is getting a bit slow. She was experiencing Internet Explorer slowing down and practically freezing up after about an hour of internet use. She has an Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 GHz Intel M processor, 512 MB RAM.

Things I've Done:
Install SpyBot
Install AVG
Install O&O Defrag
Install FireFox
Configure msconfig (only 30 processes on startup, nothing is using a lot of RAM)

I ran SpyBot, AVG and O&O. No errors found and it was defragged nicely. FireFox now has AdBlock on it so she can stay away from bandwidth using ads.

However, her computers still seems to lock up once in awhile. Anyone have any clue on what else I can do to speed things up a bit? She is using the classic Windows theme (Windows XP) so her visual appearances aren't slowing it down either. The laptop itself is about 3 years old.

I'm running a similar laptop, and the only thing that I found really worked was a clean install of Windows XP Professional...

If the OS is the one that came with the PC, then have you removed all the bloat that dell put on? Even if you disabled them in msconfig you might as well uninstall/delete them as well.
Other than that I think it's fine. If it's still slow, you might want to reinstall the OS.

Another thing is that I upgraded the memory in my laptop... you may want to consider that.

You should also be able to pinmod that 1.5ghz 400fsb to a 2.0ghz 533fsb
which is a pretty simple procedure , here is a nice little guide. replace xx with tt

lol So, pretty much a lost cause? D'oh. Oh well. I will talk to her and see if she will allow me to do a clean install. Something tells me she has a clean install cause she had to get it reformatted by a computer repair shop and I don't think they put the bloatware back on... I don't recognize anything unusual either, or anything that looks like bloatware.

I'll see if that's an option to just reinstall. If not, I'll tell her to sell her soul for a new laptop
