New Member. Could use advice

Thread Starter
First off, hello everyone. I am new to this board, as well as new to OC'ing. I am building a new PC and could use some guidance from some more experienced people. I currently have a HP m9040n, upgraded with a 8800 gt and 4gb ram. I want to build a better gaming rig and i want to OC it. I know the parts I want, but would like to know if they are easy to OC, or if you can recommend different parts, while staying in the same price range.

Computer to build:
Case - Coolmaster Cosmos 1000 (already ordered)
MB - Asus P5e3 Deluxe / Wifi
Processor - Intel q6600
Ram - 4gb G Skill ddr2 1066
GPU - 9800 gx2 (one for now, will try to get 2)

I have a few things i want to make sure the system has:
- SLI capable (do not care about 3-way SLI)
- PCI Express 2.0 slots

Is there anything else that you would recommend? Please let me know. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Is SLI possible with two different video card types? i.e...a 9800 gx2 and a 8800 gt? I don't think so, but i don't know. Would i be better buying a second 8800 gt and using SLI with that instead of the 9800 gx2 (and saving 400.00)?

Thank you.

You cannot SLI with two different cards
I would rather get two 8800gt's or 8800gts's and SLI them over two 9800GX2's

Here are 2 really good overclocking motherboards that I would prefer over the P5E3:
Gigabyte P35-D3SL:

DFI P35 BloodIron:

1. No SLI isn't possible with two types of cards. Sorry

2. If you get a 9800GX2 i will slap you. Nah i won't, but seriously. Save the $400 dude and get another 8800GT. They perform quite amazingly in SLI for some reason. Really good value cards. No need for a GX2 if you already own 1 8800GT

That system looks awesome to me

One thing, make sure you get the G0 stepping of the Q6600. It runs a lot cooler than the B3 and Overclocks better too!

If you have trouble finding a place that has guaranteed G0 stepping let us know.

EDIT: May i ask what CPU cooler you will be using? If you want to OC that beauty you will need a pretty good cooler. Quads tend to run a bit on the hot side.

For an air cooler look at the Tuniq Tower and the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with some Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) thermal paste

EDIT2: You say you already own 4GB of RAM? Is that the Gskill PC8500 you are already using?

If yes then keep them, if you do not own them and are looking to buy. Get the G Skill HZ 800's they will more than likely OC to 950+ and on a 1:1 divider you won't need more than that on a Q6600 i don't beleive. It will save you some money to put a side for a decent HSF

wow.....you guys respond quick on this board. Thank you for the info. I assumed you could not do it, but it can't hurt to ask. Why would you prefer it (2x 8800gt over 9800 gx2), if you don't mind me asking?

I saw that motherboard, but it only has 1 PC express slot, so i can not go SLI....does SLI really make that big a difference.

yes additional cooling is a must if you are OC'ing buddy.

The stock HSF are usually pretty useless in all honesty. Look at the two air coolers in my previous post. They are the most favored air coolers because they are two of the best you can buy.

We recommend 2x 8800GT because of the price : performance. They will play anything out at the moment and you save $400. That is a good reason in itself.

The 9800GX2 is really for the benchmark nuts So if you are a benchmarker go for it, but just for gaming it isn't really necessary.

EDIT: SLI makes a difference if you want to play a a high resolution. What resolution is your current monitor? SLI is a good thing to have, but is a mostly a luxury. It isn't needed to play games at upto 1440x900 but above that resolution one card will struggle. So SLI will be required for maximum settings.

my monitor is HP 2408 (i think) 24" 1900 * 1200 native resolution. So to push that resolution SLI is pretty much needed to keep an acceptable frame rate?

Ohhh yes, definitely get SLI.

If you look in the for sale section. There are several people selling 8800GT's if you want to save money on buying retail.
