What's the bottleneck when the game stutters down to 0 frames for 1-2 seconds?

0-5 FPS, or just quick occasional freezes from time to time.

That's not a bottleneck. Sounds like a stutter during load times, or just bad game coding.

Wild guess is you have a background process that is popping up to kill your FPS and then going quiescent again. I doubt it's a hardware problem. Norton Internet Security 2007? That's a common complaint.

Usually means you're running out of memory, the dips happen when the game tries to store data on the (much slower) harddrive.

It could also be caused by a cpu bottleneck, either hardware, or something like an antivirus is eating up resources.

This happens to me all the time while playing oblivion, and I have 4 gigs of ram so I doubt that's the issue. It's most likely loading from hard-drive to RAM -- I am using an old crappy IDE drive because my sata drive was broken when it arrived, so there's a bottleneck right there.
