i paid $299 for mine brand new (8G)
they normally go for $399. they have refurbs at AT&T for $249
compared to a WM pda phone, i'd consider them cheap since something like the HTC touch will run you ~$500 after phone + memory card. but you end up with a less intuitive gui, slower processor, less responsive touch screen, slower processor, etc. most wm pda phones have a 400mhz processor, the iphone's is 600mhz (mainly runs at 450mhz, but speed increases up to 600mhz when needed). the iphone's gui is really snappy, switching apps takes no time. all the wm devices i've owned, took a while between apps, etc. my tilt was like having a brick up against my head when i was talking on it. yes, my iphone is wider, but not nearly has heavy or thick.
in short, expensive depends on your opinion of expensive, but in comparison to other devices in it's class, it's a real bargain.
