Clean Installation XP to Vista - Page 2

When installing Vista simply choose the HDD you want it to install to as normal, but do not format it!

The installation procedure will then copy all current files into a directory called Windows.old before installing Vista.

After Vista is installed you can then browse to that directory to move any files you want to keep before deleteing it.

Just boot from the disc and install, the only difference is you don't erase/format the disc. And it will put the old windows files on a folder for you.

As others have stated, forget the OS upgrade and do a clean format and install. You say you have another hard drive, so simply back up your files (documents, images, porn, whatever ) there. It's always a good idea to have your files either on another partition or hard drive anyhow.

I'll probably do it the other way around because the one with all the files is 400gb and the one i would be backing up is only 40 :O so i'll just install vista on that 40gb drive

You could split your 400GB HD into 2 partitions one partition being around 40-50gigs and the other one being 350gigs to backup/save on. This way you wont have to install an other hard drive, you wont slow down vista with an older hard drive, and later you can use the 40GB in a seperate computer if you need to

These are 2 seperate partitions on ONE hard drive right? If so, then yes that sounds right. just be sure to transfer all your files you need to 350GB J: drive before you install Vista on 50GB I: drive! Also remember that you can't backup applications that are already installed in windows by just copying them. You have to re-install those apps of course. I'm sure you know that but, just want to be on the safe side .
